Bad braking when in D but good in N
I can be going 30-40 and slam on the brakes and the pedal is very hard and I don't slow down very fast and I don't get even a screech from the tires. But at 30-40 in neutral I slam on the brakes and can just lock them up and slow down much sooner. Any suggestions?
The pedal seems better in neutral and I know I'm not just slowing down faster because I'm locking them up. I know in neutral I'm not getting any power to the rear, but it shouldn't make that much of a difference, at least not to the extreme that I'm experiencing. Thanks guys.

Oh yeah, don't know if this will help any. But its a 88 IROC with 4 wheel discs.

Sounds like you're not getting enough vacuum assist for the power brakes when the car is in gear. Check the vacuum hose from the brake booster. Also check how much manifold vacuum you have at idle and in gear. It shouldn't drop very much between the 2.
The brake booster could be failing also.

also check your idle ..should be 600-800
rpm on your tach ... if it's higher your car
is still trying to push the car in gear !!
also on FWD cars mostly ..the lockup coverter
gets stuck engaged .. which usally causes
stalling ...I've only seen one 700R4 do that though :\

Thanks guys. Well I know its not the vacuum line from the manifold to the brake booster, because I checked that a while ago, but I'll check again.
I will check the vacuum between idle and in gear though and see what the difference is.
My idle in park is about 1k and in gear is about 800-850. Also when I'm at a stop or something when I just left off the brakes I start moving, without having to hit the gas or anything. Thanks again for the help guys.

that seems like a high idle. Your car is definately pushing you then.

Ok well I just got back from driving the car and the idle is actually about 950-1000 in gear. Anyone got any more suggestions. My timing is set at about 6*, which is stock, or maybe 7*. So I know its not that thats making it idle too high.

What kind of car do you have. Carb, just adjust the idle. TPI, follow the procedures in the tech article section of this board to adjust minimum air on you IAC. TBI, sorry, no idea.
