Noise at 20mph? Bearings?
Hello,
i've got a weird problem.
When i decelerate to around 20mph there is a noise that sounds like something rotating, like a bearing, is going bad.
While accelerating there is no noise, above or below 20mph there is no noise, there aren't any vibrations in the steering wheel and it doesn't matter, if i'm in first, second, third gear or in neutral.
My first guess were the front wheel bearings. I changed them but no noticeable change.
My next guess are the rear axle bearings or the differential bearing. So i jacked my car up, rotated the wheels by hand. Couldn't notice anything.
I checked the yoke, but it seems to be just fine. No play, neither up/down nor in/out, although the seal is leaking a bit. Then i started the engine and let it rotate the wheels. Also nothing unusual.
(One thing that i experience for quite some time, well, years actually, is a light vibration around 50 mph. But i think this is not related to this problem, since the vibrations only occur when the accelerator is lightly pressed.)
I'm a bit lost here.
Could it be a bad bearing in the first place?
Wouldn't a bad bearing make noise all the time?
Could it be something else?
Did anybody experienced something similar?
I searched the board already, but couldn't find a clue.
English is a foreign language to me, so if something is not clear, i'll try to rephrase it.
Thanks for any advice!
Edit:
It turned out to be the front tires. They were unevenly worn.
