im finally back, and in need of help

ive been in central iowa for the summer without my camaro. i worked really really hard and now its time to reap the benefits. my car has been sitting in my dads garage for almost 5 months and its finally time to bring it back to SLO. i need some help locating a few parts to make my camaro a bit faster and better looking. if you could recommend anything that would be great:

1. i once saw a billet grill for the 3rd gen camaro, does anyone have one or know where i can find the maker?

2. how big tires can fit on an 86 camaro cpe? i was thinking along the lines of 245/50/17's for all 4's, can i get larger?

3. my drivetrain needs a brushing up. my tranny is on its way out (150k on a 700r4), i was reading in the tech articles that many have swapped in a 6 speed, but i fear that may be too espensive. does anyone have a ballpark cost for everything(clutch, pedals, tranny.....)

4. i have the peg leg 273 rear right now. ive read a 323 posi is best for my combo, but if anyone could tell me the pros/cons to a 373 that would be great.


thats all that i can think of today, i have plenty of time (12 units and no job) and the money i have saved. im gonna tow it down to school sometime this weekend, it has a large exhaust leak that i need to fix, so if ya'll could get back to me ASAP that would be great.

Welcome back.

I'd concentrat on repairing the transmission first. As for changing to a manual, it can be done, but you'll be faster with an automatic - nearly guaranteed.

If you were thinking of changing the rear gearing, you might want to consider a slightly higher stall speed torque converter (with TCC, of course) when you repair the transmission instead of changing gears right away. You'll get a similar benefit, and the trrans will already be out. You can change to a posi rear as soon as you find that you cannot control wheelspin on acceleration with the peg-legger, but you might have a better feel for the gear ratio you want. 3.42 might be more advantageous for overall driving, and with a higher stall converter nearly as effective as the higher ratio gears.

Once you get the drivetrain resolved, you can start shopping for decorations if you like.
