MSD vs. Mallory vs. Accel distributers...is MSD worth it?

I'm putting a new distributer on my very mild daily driver (current mods in sig.) to replace the corroding factory late 70's HEI disty that is just not giving me the throttle response or gas milage I should be getting. This summer or fall I'll be adding a Vortec intake, heads, and a Comp 268 cam.

I've been looking at MSD, Mallory, and Accel distributers. My question is...is it worth paying $350 for the MSD Street Billet (no ignition box needed) with Blaster 2 then the Mallory or Accel HEI distributers that run about $160?

Also if you run an MSD did you gain anything noticable?

Thanks for your time,
Matt

A friend of mine had a mallory setup on a carbed 383. He installed a msd set up. Claims he gained 20 hp on the dyno. I havent seen the dyno sheet but I have never had a reason to doubt what he's said before. I have owned a mallory and it made a big improvent over the stock setup on my other car. I am going to go with the msd sometime soon on this car.

I've never seen a motor dynoed and have the ignition changed over to something different while on the stand, but at the track we had a few guys go from the stock, worn out HEI to the complete MSD set-up and had NO gain what so ever in time. One of the fellas said he noticed his car started a little quicker and idled smoother, but I guess when you go from a points distributor and coil from the 70's to a new ignition I'd expect it to be a shade better myself The only reason I'm going to MSD is for the rev control and 3-step option, if not for the "add-on" capibilites I'd save my money and stick it elsewhere as the price vs gains is a losing propositon.

Yeah, that's kind of what I thought. Anything is going to be better than what I have now, but the MSD is not worth paying almost $200 more for. I think I'm going to go with the new Mallory HEI distributers w/coil-in-cap and the Hyfire VI-AL with rev limiter. All the Mallory stuff is still cheaper than just an MSD disty w/ coil.

Does anyone have the Mallory ignition? I'd really like to search but it's down right now.

Thanks,
Matt
