Carb swap, wiring question

Posted on elec. board also, gonna try here. I'm doing the swap, and the wiring "bulkhead" by the brake booster is worrying me. My bro in law cut all the wires except the ones that run to the starter, all the Easter looking color wires(best way to describe the pinks and lavenders, pastels maybe ) were cut. The headlights and such weren't touched, just the largest of the "bulkheads". Which of these wires do I still need? Will the oil press. guage, coolant temp, still work? Any help would be appreciated. Pics of your wiring would help too!

88 IROC 5.7 Auto if that helps

It continues to mystify me why anyone would cut wiring. That's about the stupidest thing you can possibly do to a car. It just makes everything so much harder, because almost every time, you don't have a clue what you just hacked, and now you have to figure out how to make stuff work that by definition you don't understand in the first place, since if you understood it, you wouldn't have strafed the wires in the first place. You might as well take a sharp stick and poke yourself in the eye and then go work on the car, and when it quits hurting, poke yourself again, and keep doing that until you get finished. I do that once in a while.... just because it feels so good when I quit.

There's not alot of advice we can give you now. It's too late. All of the wires in the bulkhead connector on the driver's side are required to run the car, or work the gauges, or something. All you can do now is to go get a complete wiring harness out of a car that hasn't been sodomized, without cutting anything, and put the car back together correctly. Then carefully remove what's left of the one that originates on the pass side of the car (which is the computer one) by unplugging, not cutting, and remove it from the car.

There are 2 halves of that bulkhead connector. One of them goes to the body and runs stuff like headlights, turn signals and so forth; the other (larger) one goes to the engine, and has things like the starter solenoid wire, the alternator connections, the gauge sending unit wires, etc. There is another harnesss under the hood that should be left alone, that comes through the firewall right below the heater hoses; that one is for the A/C & heater.

I'm terribly sorry to hear that another really special classic car has fallen victim to a hack. I hope you can get it straightened out.

The ecm wires, the ones that run through the fender well were pulled out already. The only cutting was near the brake booster. The light pink, light purple, and puke color wires were the only ones hacked. I was asking cause my brother in law left with his Army unit and I had no time to find out what he did. Evedently he knew what he was doing cause he did a carb swap in his 89 Z28. I was just wanting to finish the job before he gets back,(if he does, he's with the 101st) I'm going to aftermarket guages also if that helps, the origional dash is gone. What I was asking is which wires are neccesary for normal function, not keeping F.I. -- going carb for light street use, more track use.

They're all necessary. Every one. Except for ones (maybe 3 or 4 total) that the ECM wires plug in to and that should have been just unplugged as the ECM harness was removed.

If it's only a few wires that got the axe, you might be able to figure out what they went to. There are only a couple of places where teh 2 assemblies cross paths; the cooling fan circuit (the fan switch is in the engine harness, but there's a connection to the ECM as well); the A/C (not part of the engine harness, but it's so that the ECM knows if the air is on); an ignition feed.

Other than those interconnects that unplug, every single wire in the engine harness has a job to do that's independent of the ECM, and therefore needs to be there whether there's a computer or not. They do things like carry ignition to the coil, work the various gauges, the alternator, and the starter, and so forth.

Best wishes to your brother in law. Maybe he can get the opportunity to learn how to work on a car in a little more sanitary fashion when he gets back.

I went to his house and managed to get his wife to show me his car. I see what he did, he replaced the 11 wires he hacked with aftermarket wiring, as he has all digital equip inside, I didn't know that. He also didn't have wiper motor or heater, and I'm pretty sure he has a mechanical fuel pump, so that may be what he was doing, he said he was gonna suprise me for my birthday. Thanks for your help, maybe I can sort the 11 wires that were cut and reconnect them!
