Valve seat Leak...yay

well , i re assembled my heads, and sure nuff, i suck at controlling a grinder.....

i put them togather, poured rubbing alchohol in all the ports to check for leaks, ....after 5 mins it seemed all good....then after ten mins i saw a small minute bit of liquid seeping out of a couple intake valve seats.

any way to correct this?? or do i even need to fix it?? would it be fine to slap them on???

Did you lap the valves?

funny story, after i posted this i got the brilliant idea to grab a real slow rpm drill, put it on the end of the valve, tighten it, put some rubbing compod on it, and spin it over a few times....i just got done doing this and am letting them sit so i can look for leaks...lets pray

if the seat is damaged too much to lap back in your only option is to have it ground. if the head is clean and disassembled it shouldn't cost much. i use to pay 40 dollars for v8 head for seats and valves before i got my valve grinding equipment.

You might like to know there is a substance called Valve Grinding Compound (or valve lapping compound) that is designed to do EXACTLY what you jsut did with rubbing alcohol. It's got VERY VERY fine abrasive particles in it that help seat things together. It works very well and was a "must have" back in the old days when the machine tools that cut the rough seats weren't nearly as accurate as they are today.

Just a word of caution about this stuff- don't leave ANY of it in the ports or on the seat. If you get even a pinch of it down into the engine it'll tear hell outta the rings and bearings. SUPER clean the heads after using it.

way ahead o fyou, i have some, ive been using it, ..its taking some work....i must of nicked the hell out of the valve seat with the die grinder....i have one head done, no leaks....the other well, its a work in progress, itll take the entirety of today to get them seating properly.

and i was using the alchohol to check for leaks, not to lap the valves ....alcohol is thinner than pretty much anything i cant think of, so itll leak through damn near microscopic ridges of what not.

and yes, that stuff is like...well it IS liquid sand paper...if it even gets on the valve stem itll cut up the valve guides and hender the head useless. thanks for the warning though, some people wouldnt know and would have just slapped the heads on after lapping and not clean them well.

after im done im going to hose them down with brake cleaner , that stuff is about the most potent thing you can bu that come in a can.
