Distributor Assembly.

Hey guys. Do any of you have a pic or a link to the assembly of the electronic (small one with seperate coil) distributor?

I took mine apart trying to find out why my ignition system is cutting out at 3000 rpm. I was going to replace the pickup coil. When i pulled the shaft out, the round cover and the clip fell off.
I am not sure what the function of the cover is, but it was obviously loose and wabbling around. I think this was my problem all along, and need to know the proper way to assemble it. Pics would help.

I have the cover on, but i am not sure if it is supposed to move freely, or be fixed in one location.

The round coil cover is a magnetic shield. It can be allowed to rotate on the mounting, but the "C" clip/retaining snap ring should hold it relatively securely to the mounting. Rotation of the cover really doesn't matter.

The important factor is that the pickup coil is locked into position and the reluctor is secured to the distributor shaft.

Putting it back together tonight, i realized why the clip wasnt retaining the shield. The bushing that the snapring and clip attach too is driven too far into the distributor housing. The Ring that holds the coil on will fit, but the clip that holds the cover wont even come close. I could probably fit the ciol and the cover under the first clip, but im not sure if it would cause a problem.

What do you think Vader?

As long as the cover is not compressing the coil, it should be O.K., if not a bit unorthodox. Then again, creativity can have its own benefits.

Using one clip didnt evan get it.... I had to make up a tool to knock the bushing out just a hair, and now it is PROPERLY assembled. I test drove it and it runs great!!!

Now i regret filling up with cheap gas on the way home the other day........
