1989 Firebird Formula 5.0 TPI 5 Speed
Hello,
I have learned so much about the 3rd generation cars form this site. I bought a 3rd generation car 3 weeks ago in hopes to finally having a sports car.
During all my weeks of reading posts at this site I am afraid that this car may not be for me as they seem to need alot of work down the road....okay now to my question.
About how much can I get for this car if if I sell it now as-is.
Its a RED 1989 Pontiac Firebird Formula with:
305 TPI Engine with 102,000 miles
5 Speed Manual Transmission
Brand new Tires
AC Works Great
Power windows & locks work great
Seats are in like new condition
Interior is in very good condition
Does not shake & runs very like new
Car has new tires & brakes
No T-Tops
The only problems I see are the paint on the fin is fading & there are 2 small dents on the drivers side. The car puts out some blue smoke at startup.
This car is all factory original with no mods at all.
I can post pictures too..

Any "fast" car needs work down the road. Mustangs need a lot of work too. Even imports like 300zx, supra, rx-7, eclipse turbo, 3000gt, etc.. From what it sounds like you got a really good thirdgen. It may seem like these cars need a lot of work because the people on this board modify/race there cars and that always makes stuff break faster.
Your car has the 5speed and the best 305 tpi. That thing should be fast too cause it is much lighter than the Trans Am/IROC. I would learn how to do maintenance and just don't race it too much or modify it and it might turn out pretty reliable for you.

How much do you want to spend to fix it? None of those problems NEED to be fixed, your car will live a nice life with them! Changing to a different oil might even stop the smoking, repainting the fin is not a big deal, and dents can be taken out.
Buying a car with 100xxx miles will always need work, but thats what I like about it. I have learned more about cars since buying mine than I ever would have without it.
If you don't want to work on it, I understand that. In southern California that car would go for at least $4500-5000, just from your description. I know cars are priced much differently in Ney York, however.

That car should sell for $1000 and I will buy it from you...
Seriously, that sounds like a nice car there. There are very few cars you can buy in this price range that need that little work and are so reliable. That car is a great starting point for a fast little car. You want to keep it reliable? Give it a tune-up, a nice cat-back exhaust (maybe even headers), some subframe connectors and do some of the free mods to the TPI and K&N filters and you have yourself a nice quick hotrod that will give you 30mpg on the highway. (that is the formula i used similar to the one on my car, 92 RS). If you take care of your 'bird, it will take care of you.
And remember, as much as we act like we don't like each other, we're a big family eager to help out our fellow f-body owners.
Enjoy,
Chris
