Rebuild question...
What exactly is done during an engine rebuild? I know parts are cleaned, but which ones? Gaskets are replaced, yes? If I keep my 92 firebird I may want to dump a 350 in it, but too expensive for a brand new engine. I would find a used 350 in fair condition and rebuild it. While its out, I'd add a cam probably. Possibly more.
How much money would a TPI wiring harness and PROM go for? I have offers for a 350 TPI.

1992 Pontiac Firebird (stock)
- 305ci V8 TBI / Automatic Trans / Every option, excluding leather
- Killer car audio system:

Depends on what you want out of your motor.. I have an LG4 305 that I just had rebuilt & I'm at 317hp now.. I can give you a list of new parts installed if that's what you're looking for..
Cylinders bored 30 over
deck & heads were machined
3 angled valve job
flat top pistons
new cam
custom ground crank
new intake manifold
new carb
new bearings & freeze plugs
plus all the gaskets & dress-up stuff
there are others, but I don't have the list with me..
either way you go it could get pretty expensive..
I spent $1485.0 in parts alone..
I wanted to keep my numbers matched, so I went with the rebuild..
My next car will definately have a 350 or 400 dropped in it..
Good luck...

If its your first one, plan for a lot of down time. If you know what youre doing its a snap, but for the first time, take your time.
As simple as it sounds, make sure you do it right. You'd be surprised how easy it is to screw up something. For example, the limit for a crank is "0.030 30 thousands of an inch. Very, very hard to detect w/ naked eye.
Now, I dont want to scare you off, I just want to scare you enough to take your time and go slow. Get and use plastigage. If you take a shortcut, any shortcut, IT WILL come back to haunt you. Take my word for it.
Most important item to clean and have checked is the block. That was my undoing. The 87+ blocks are supposed to be very prone to cracking in the lifter valley.
You would buy an engine gasket kit. Its like $92 dollars, but worth every dime. That will include EVERY gasked used on that engine. DO NOT reuse any of your gaskets.
If you take your disassembled engine to a machine shop, they should be able to hot-tank your parts. It usually involves caustic acid, and it comes out looking brand new.
While at the machine shop have them mike the pistons and crank so you can see what size bearings you need. (Between "0.000 and "0.010 isnt much, but it can make a difference)
The above is general. Once you decide what you want (for ex: 400HP 350, 250HP 305) then we can discuss what parts you need to buy.
Good luck to you

Go look at summits 350 rebuild kits, they will give you a good Idea....and forget about the Cast kit b/c it is crap. I will be going with the Summit Kit with out pistons and have it set for .030 over pistons(have yet to check the crank), and get Federal Mougal Hyperblablabla Pistons for 12.99 each. BEFORE YOU MOD ANYTHING, make sure the WHOLE car is performing at is peak I.E. it came off the show room floor. Do not reuse and parts that a cheap and/or important (gaskets, pistons, rings....)to buy, Go and buy them, that way you don't have to worry about it later. Finally don't cheap out and not get the meachine work done. I am about to a 350 rebuild to replace my 305. I am bringing everything back to "Stock", that way I have a good mod platform.
