Any states don't check emissions??

It's getting harder and harder to get an inspection on a modified car in Texas. It used to be as easy as kicking the inspector a $20 or $50 and viola...a new sticker would appear in the window. Now, if the car is 25 years old or less, they wanna sniff the tailpipe, do a visual inspection for all factory emissions equip for that year, take some blood and sleep with my wife. I was wondering if there are any states that don't have emissions laws or at least don't worry about older cars like thirdgens. It's not that I want to polute the air, I'd just like to be able to build a nice engine that can breathe free without having to drive a 62 plymouth.

As far as I'm aware Michigan doesn't have any emissions, but I could be wrong.
Don't come looking for emmisions free inspection in New Jersey. Our state sucks just about as much as you described.

Only something like 15% of Oregon has to test. Heck, it's legal to run open header here if your cars not real obnoxious.

Here in Virginia they're supposed to do a VISUAL check to assure that all emissions equipment is present (no one does), but no tailpipe sniffing.

My county requires sniff and visual here in Va. It sucks because the county over (which the borderline is within throwing distance) doesnt require anything.

Ive heard tho that you can get a PO box in a county that doesnt have emmisions and register the car to that address and then you dont need emmisions. Infact my neighbour does that.

Anyone know how expensive PO box's are???

True I had my cars still registered to my parents address when I lived in Denver. Pueblo still doesent have testing and never will"knock on wood". I beleive it requires a vote, I doubt that will ever happen. But If you do geta PO box beware cops can and will give you a citation to get an Echeck if they see you enough in thier territory.

I'm in Nobles County in SW Minnesota and I recently bought a 86 Iroc with a blown engine, so I put in a stout 350 and had an inspection to get it retitled. Not a thing about emissions. Guess they don't care up here in the North!

I can attest to that. Up here in Alberta nobody cares how much I pollute the atmosphere

Of course, the sad thing is the other day I took my car to a free emissions test (Put on by the Federal Government) to see how bad it failed, since I have NO emissions equipment left on my car. Guess what? The guy congratulated me because me car passed! I couldn't believe it. The TV news crew wanted to put me on TV because they wanted to show you could drive a sports car and still pass emission's testing.

See, that's what I don't get. You can have a car that'll run clean without having to use crap gas and all the smog equipment. I bet I could pull all the emissions stuff off mine and pass the sniffer with flying colors too. grrrrrrrrrr California sucks.

massachusetts does sniffing on a dyno (not a hp dyno) and visual. they even check to make sure your gas cap seals properly with a vacuum hose hooked to the sniffer machine. 30 bucks and you can fail for just about anything. your cat converter sheild has to be in place...or u fail. my car is getting registered in florida as we speak.
thank *** for family in fl !!

here in sc i think we have some wierd law like you cant take any emissions stuff off your car.. but if you do, they wont do anything about it because they dont check.. enjoying it, its nice not having to worry about emissions when your ordering parts

As long as it moves under its own power, we just assume its in top running shape here in SC. We're cool that way.

Actually, there's a law in Michigan (could be a federal law) saying that you have to have all your emissions stuff in place. The thing is, they don't check it and don't care about it over here.

I'm pretty sure its a federal law that you can't tamper with emissions controls. But like you said, its up to the state or county officials to decide if they want to enforce it or not.

Here in the Detroit area, we used to have to buy our favorite dealership/gas station employee a 12-pack to get our cars to pass. Most test sites would keep an escort or festiva around to provide the tailpipe But for the last 5 years or so, we haven't evne had to do that! Maybe its because we have a Republican governor, who knows. But at any rate, anything goes in Michigan!

No testing here in Kalifornia.
AHAHAHAHAAHAH Right..

Apparently there are very few places in this dictatorship that do not test, but the numbers are dwindling rapidly. It used to be you could get a PO Box in a place that didnt test and have the car registered there, but they caught on to that... so then we got a box that was listed just as an address with a number after it, looked like an apartment number... well they caught onto that too, and now I dont know any way around it.

You guys in other states might try those ideas for now.

My Dad had a Porsche 930 that he couldn't get even close to passing the test in the county we lived in, so he ended up registering through the business he owned that happened to be in the next county. Bad thing was he forgot about that little trick and when he went to sell the business it was considered an asset. (Luckily he caught it in time)
Ps. This is in Florida, Duval and St. Johns county.

nothing in kentucky either that I know of. We don't put up with that liberal enviromentalist bullsh*t! If you build a good engine you don't need that crap. Just goes to show what happens when politicians and environazis dictate rules instead of scientists and engineers.

87TPI420,
Mass isn't so bad, anything 1984 and prior does not need the sniffer.
A cool 30 pack makes one not look for the converter.

When I went for my inspection a few months back I did not have to put my car on the emissions dyno (here in NJ). They told me because my car only had 20K miles, it was exempt. Now that is in New Jersey where is almost as difficult as California to pass. So my recommendation is that you go in to inspection with 20K miles on your odometer (however you have to do it).

Northern Va has the tail sniffer crap. Rest of VA is supposed to be visual.

When I took my car to the inspection station, the odometer only read 18000 or so. But they made me do everything. Maybe the DMV wasn't joking when they said they didn't believe that the odometer read that. Crap... time to find the title again. By the way, did you go to a gas station or the state inspection place? I had to go to the state because it was free.

here's my two cents worth, Atlanta Ga. bites. the rest of the state has no tests. But like a cancer it slowly spreads and gobbles up a few more counties every couple of years. So guess what I am about to be gobbled in 2003. In Atlanta (metro area) they got hip to the pass the guy a 20 and get a sticker trick. So now they have some fool proof way that there's no way to trick anyone. Its like 20 years in jail.

Its gotta be the worse here in california. The idiots who run this place can't even keep the lights on but they go out of their way to enforce these irrational emissions laws to passify a handful of tree-hugging eco-fascists in berkeley. The worse part is these morons at these "certified" smog check places **** around with stuff and disconnect all your smog hoses (there are a billion of them under your hood), and don't reconnect it all when they're done. I don't know many times at my job at Kragen i have people coming in complaining about the same thing. For the last few years i've been able to get free certificates from a friend who works at a local dealership but he's leaving that job soon. I'm probably going to have to a)swap in a TPI engine/lt1 or b)get another firebird/camaro because doing anything to get some kind of power out of my POS 305 won't be emissions-legal. Funny because here in SoCal its just as smoggy as it was before the smog-check racket started.

They don,t test emissions here in okla. As of a few months ago, they did away with inspection stickers totally. It isn,t legal for our cars to cross the state lines in any direction, ha, ha. I wonder what the law is about cars from states that don,t require inspections, that do alot of traveling in states that do, humm? I guess you could tag your car in a state that doesn,t require sniffing or inspections, but most states have or they are in the process of passing laws to stop that.

No testing here in Montana. Makes it really nice when modifying your car. If you know who to talk to you can get an exhaust shop to do up an exhaust system without a cat. I don't know if you can do that just anywhere. Only downside is having a really fast car for the snowy roads three months out of the year.
