Very Inconsistent Missfire, Stall & Restart
I have an '89 Iroc Z with TPI 305, 5 Speed, with 209,000 miles. The car is stock. I have a very intermittent problem with the vehicle where, as you are driving down the road, it will start to missfire, the shift light and service engine soon light will blink, and the tachometer will go up to about 3500 RPM (even though the engine is just sputtering at that point) and it will eventually stall out completely. If I wait a minute it will restart and run perfectly for weeks or months before it will do the same thing again another time weeks or months later.
Unfortunately no codes are being set because the SES light is not on long enough. I usually don't fix problems by throwing parts at it, but this problem is so intermittent, its impossible to diagnose conventionally. When the engine starts to cut out, it definitely feels like spark related misfiring rather than fuel starvation. Since it has the original Ignition Module with 209,000 miles on it, I was going to start by replacing it. Am I on the right track here? Any suggestions based on like experiences will be greatly appreciated.
