383 or 355?

im goin to be using l98 heads.a tbi unit from a 305 with bigger injectors.

for the block,,,it is a 78 4 bolt main 350.im getting it bored .030.i was wondering what else should i get done to it?

also.im not really looking for a 500 horses.maybe around 325 with the 355 and around 400 with the 383.whatever i decide to build.the tranny and rear end is not a problem.i just wanna know what i should do to the motor.would a FI 355 or 383 be practible? its goin a a lo3 92 camaro.i got the block ready for boring.but i wanna know what all i should have done to it before i make 30 different trips to the machine shop.could i use the stock computer(305 tbi) with this setup?i dont figure.but heck,its worth a shot.

thank you
Anthony

I'm in no position to make recommendations on your choice of induction, as i'm not well versed in TBI. But i'd make damn sure you know all about it, before putting any money into it. 325HP on a 350, 400HP on a 383, with TBI injection, kinda raises a flag with me. Remember the 454 in the early '90s chev SS trucks? Yea, 225HP. Wow eh? Someone told me that was mostly due to the TBI setup. But again, I never claim to know f-all about TBI, so...

Do you have a useable 350 crank right now? I mean, doesn't need to be turned down, is PERFECTLY useable? That's the only time i'd say "go for the 350". Anytime you have to spend $100 to turn the crank, might as well spend $200 and get a brand new one, then you might as well make it have a slightly longer stroke (same price either way). Boom, 33 more cubes = more HP. That's damn cheap HP.

A 383 just requires more finesse, make sure the rods clear the cam and oil pan, correct flywheel etc.

You may need to have your block decked. I highly advise putting in your rotating assembly, and measuring your deck height, and doing many many calculations using your cylinder head cc's, piston choice, gasket choice, etc, and then deck the block as needed, and get your compression ration exactly where you want it for perfect quench. No reason you can't have your cake and eat it too, just gotta plan for it.

You'll probably want your machinist to install cam bearings for you as well, unless you want to buy the tool and do it yourself. I think you should get it ;

hot tanked, magged
bored/honed for pistons

take it home, paint it, deburr it, run a tap through threaded holes. Put in the rotating assy, measure deck height. Do the math. Bring it back;

get it decked
get cam bearings installed
plugs if you want them to do it. My machinist did this with the cam bearings for me.
If you want, now is the time to have your rotating assembly balanced.

That should be all you need done, that I can think of now.

For your TBI induction, I would put the Edelbrock TBI intake on the top of your list. Getting a better intake will help you out alot on a 383, I helped my friend build up his 350 TBI and we ended up with Vortec heads 2.02/1.60 valves and GM performance parts TBI intake for Vortec heads. We got his TBI unit bored out to 2" bores and also had a TBI 1 or 2 inch spacer cant remember which? Anyways he had a machine shop bore out the intake and spacer to 2" so everything would line up nicely with the TBI. He ended up making about 280 rwhp with that set up.
