350 head start

summer is coming up fast, and i want to be ready for it, considering it could potentially be my last summer at home before transferring to a university.

now, I want to throw a very small 350 into my iroc. A stock iroc-z 350 has about the power i want, but i want just a little tad more than that. Now, i don't have a 350 and in all honesty just don't have the time or help or knowhow to go pull a good 350 from a junkyard that i can use and abuse for years to come.

im hoping to get a local machinist that built my dad's 302, to build my 350. but i really don't want to just have him pick everything out and me not knowing whats going on. i mean the guy is already building it all for me, so id like a little hand in whats going on besides how much hp i want and how much money im spending.

here is what i know i want so far:

base 350 block

edelbrock hi-flo intake port matched to port/polished stock tpi runners/plenum

hooker shorty headers

now, the only two other things id like to pick out myself, are cam and heads. but i really don't even know where to begin. someone told me any aftermarket head is far too much for an engine this small, so should i just have the machinist port a stock 350 head and slap it on there? and how about a cam? i need this car to be 100% streetable, but i want most of the power to be low end torque.

everything else, pistons, rods, whatnot i will just have him pick out and do what he does best.

ideally i want to get the shortblock and then just slap on the stuff i know is within my skill range.

engine will be bolted up to a rebuilt WC T5

any suggestions appreciated. again, just planning ahead for this last summer. it's this or paint/body work, and id rather have a great engine than a great paint job.

also, im aware i need new injectors and ecm prom, but what else should i throw on it accessory wise? fuel pressure regulator? pump? or is all that stock stuff going to work more than okay?

im looking at spending around 3 grand...+/- 500 on just the engine part...i know the accessories could cost me more

If you havnt found a block yet, look for a 87+ block, with a 1pc rear main seal, roller cam, and the 4 bolt mains

Unless of course you change the heads.

Make sure you know whats parts are going into the engine before you have it built.

Look for some information on popular hot roddings "Budget sledgehammer"

That engine was a Vortec 350 block (95-95 350, 4 bolt mains, roller cam, 1pc rear). With $2900 worth or parts and $500 or so in maching work, their engine layed out 447 hp.

Thats an immense amount of power, and theres plenty pf places where the price could be cut down.

Id say take a look into it.

Hope this helps.

Vortec heads are good, but the vortec TPI setup is kinda expensive I think. Going to a different induction setup really opens a fresh can of worms.

A roller 350 block, and your 081 heads, (off your 305) with some porting, would work just swell. Paying a machine shop to port the heads is expensive, do 'em yourself. It's not rocket surgery.

Some reasonable dished stock style pistons, a decent roller cam, and you're set. That's a 350HP low buck approach there.
