The car that will eventually send me to hell..

So I bought an 89 Iroc z camaro back in january or so. I had to have the engine rebuilt, I knew this when purchasing. Went ahead and had the engine rebuilt, and have had even more problems with it ever since. I'm going to take the car to a chevy specialist local shop out here with a laundry list of problems... The car has an ati procharger supercharger on it, the thing constantly has what appears to be belt sqeak or possibly a dreaded bearing squeak. One click forward on the key should be accessories, but no accessories work at this click.....windows, radio, etc. these all work once the car is on of course, or two clicks forward on the key. for some reason when i click the key twice forward and turn the radio on, my cooling fans come on for some reason, and shut off as soon as i shut the radio off........something has to be crosswired there. my gas gauge is constantly fluxuating. my steering wheel has some play in it, and i have to have the bushings replaced is what im told...

i don't know, the electrical crap is freaking me out, and the loud obnoxious hopefully belt squeak has to be fixed soon or im just going to take it off and run wihtout the charger until it can be fixed. if its a bearing squeak i know i don't have the money to fix the charger. and etc...

Re: The car that will eventually send me to hell..

first of all, lets approach this in a logical manner.one click back on the key is acc,the second click should be off, then it should be start.as far as the squeak, are the belts adjusted properly? the more info you provide, the more i can help

Re: The car that will eventually send me to hell..

i forgot to mention that ever since the rebuild, when i start the car the engine revs up to 2500-2700 rpms for about 4-5 seconds and then falls back down to an average idle. If i remember correctly, before the rebuild, it did not do this, but the engine also had a spun bearing back then. The mechanic that rebuilt the engine claims that the high rpm on start is due to the supercharger. i don't really know a whole lot about cars or superchargers, but it seems to me that a device such as a supercharger that has no electrical components and is reliant off of the belt of the engine, wouldn't cause the engine to rev up that high on start.

in response to whether or not the belts are adjusted correctly, i do not know because i did not install the supercharger, the owner prior did, and i don't know much about superchargers to begin with. the belt seems quite tight. it might just be my head playing games with me, but it seems that the sqeak only happens after the engine and supercharger have warmed up, as in, the noise doens't really occur if the engine is cold.

also, this is my first camaro i've owned. i can't go out and look right now, but i'm fairly certain the order of the key is as follows....... off/lock, acc, and then whatever you call the last click before start. my key does not go backwards...

Re: The car that will eventually send me to hell..

double check the ign sequence. does it have a tilt column? as far as the wiring issues,it sounds like maybe something is wired incorrectly. when the car is off, does the radio still work?

yea, it has a tilt column. no, the radio doesn't work when the car is off. i just get freaked out when i turn the radio on when the key is in one click past acc and the fan turns on.

Re: The car that will eventually send me to hell..

i will have to access wiring diagrams to see if there is something related there.it may take me a day or so,i'll reply back if i find anything useful, sometimes, people wire things without knowing what they are doing.where are you located,it maybe easier to have someone locally look at it.

Re: The car that will eventually send me to hell..

idk about the others but im fairly positive that the 89 camaros came with the floating gas gauge sensor(sp) so when you break your gas gauge should drop....normal

Re: The car that will eventually send me to hell..

i'll have to double check with when the gauge floats around, thanks for the advice, it seems to me that at stop or idle, when the car isn't moving, more than not the gauge will show less gas than what i actually have and when i accellerate it goes higher. this would make sense though if its a floating gauge sensor and its reading when the gas is sloshing around. i'll keep a closer eye on it. thanks for the help so far guys.

i mplanning a little treat for you all tomorrow. im going to film all the problems with my car and post them on youtube and post the links here for you all to see what im talking about.

amazingly enough, the car's body and interior is in amazing condition. the engine was clean, aside from needing to be rebuilt. the car itself is in pretty good shape. it just has these weird problems here and there. i don't know. i'm going to upload the videos later today. thanks for all the interest and advice so far guys

Re: The car that will eventually send me to hell..

could only get the first 2 vids right now , but my 89 iroc starts about the same & its a stock tpi motor . Plus you cant trust the factory tach , check it on a manual tach.

the noise you here sounds like a typical supercharger whine to me ?

do you still have the tpi on it ?
that thing must run like a beast !
good luck Mike

A manual tach eh?

Doesnt matter what the tach says, the motor still revs up quite a bit on start before it idles down...

it seems like the supercharger noise video works with the first two, but the 3rd video isn't. i'm re-uploading the acc, radio fan video and will put up a new link in a second.

p.s., it does run like a beast

hopefully this link will work in a few minutes once youtube registers the video

Re: The car that will eventually send me to hell..

i think i may have found the problem with the supercharger. if you look at the video, you will see that it is mounted improperly. the label on the supercharger should be completely horizontal, however, this is not the case. i assume rotating the supercharger will not only provide for proper lubrication, but put more tension on the belt. i am going to rotate it tomorrow and let you guys know how it goes.

Re: The car that will eventually send me to hell..

holy f**k am i going to kill something........ i just spent the morning rotating the supercharger and the belt i had for it was too small. so after a morning of cut fingers and constant swearing, i had to go get a bigger belt. 30 dollars later, i overestimated myself, and purchased too large a belt. now i have to return it and buy one in between. i'm broke, disheartened, and part of me knows its not the belt squeaking...... i'm going to shoot the car in a minute.

Re: The car that will eventually send me to hell..

I've spent some time watching several youtube videos that feature prochargers installed on cars. From what i can tell... This seems to be the normal sound coming from a procharger. Several videos have similar sounding squeals. my guess is that i've spent the past several days trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. what do you guys think?

Re: The car that will eventually send me to hell..

That car is nice man, give it a hug.

My car is awesome, but it has so many weird quirks...

-It's got The Crack above the back of the driver's window
-something up front is making a quiet, but irritating rattly noise.
-high beams dont work right
-hatch struts are toast
-hood struts were toast, now replaced with new ones.
-It has a 305 TBI
-torn driver's seat
-it idles super high from a cold start
-it cranks strangely when warm, suppose the fuel pressure has to build...?
-I've got a broken off tap in my pass side cylinder head
-I've got a clamp leaking small amounts of coolant by the thermostat
-I've got a busted heater core so no heater
-shocks and struts are floaty-boaty
-rear passenger side sits an inch lower than the rear driver's side.
-driver's side front brakes seem to grab a tiny bit harder than passenger side

The list goes on. With a car this old, **** happens, but my car runs every day, it sounds great, it looks great, and I love driving it and I love my car. And to be honest, it's slow as hell, but it runs and drives damn good, doesnt even smoke on start up so I think even the valve seals are fine. For a 184,000 mile car, that's awesome to me.

i changed it about a few days ago. the video i uploaded of my supercharger is much, much worse than it is now. once i rotated it and installed it properly, it sounds like a procharger is supposed to sound. i'll upload a video later today.

Do you run the intercoolers too? What model Procharger are you running?

Good luck, you are doing it right. One step at a time, over the long run this will address all of the problems you are having.

It is a very good looking car!

I have an intercooled P-1SC-1. I replaced the oil with procharger brand oil made for that charger.
