head casting number?

Ok I have been trying to find a nice set of stock SBC heads to replace my 333882 smogers, Now I have a set of 462624's but they will not give me enough compression.

So my dad have a set of heads off his 4bolt main 350 that should have 2.02/1.60 valves but I don't know if they would work good with my 350 I took the valve cover off and took a look at the casting # on them 8888668 is what it looked like to me, it's vary hard to tell the 8's from the 6's. I cold not find them listed on any chevy casting number list.

If anyone could tell me if this 8888668 casting # is right or I just looked at the wrong number on the head that would be great thanks.

Re: head casting number?

Doesn't sound like a good number.

I wouldn't even bother with 30+ year old heads any more. There are much better casting to use now. Back in the 70's those castings were popular because good aftermarket heads were expensive or non existent.

Now, a set of Dart heads are inexpensive and a lot better than those old factory heads. If all you want are stock heads then pick up any stock replacement head and bolt them on.

Re: head casting number?

If it HAS to be a factory head, the vortecs are the best bet. Otherwise I completely agree with Stephen.

Well the heads I have on now are only good for 150-180HP. I'm just looking for about 350 HP. I will also be adding a new cam too.

If anybody could get me some info on them heads that would be sweet thanks.

Re: head casting number?

Maximum hp from heads is based on air flow. Typical factory heads have 150-170cc runners.

An 882 casting is rated as a 151cc head. It flows 205 CFM from .500-.600 lift but the head would need to be modified to support more than .500 lift. 205 CFM is capable of supporting 422 hp. It's got large combustion chambers and there are better castings to use with large combustion chambers. The 882 is a light, thin casting.

Some untouched L31 Vortec heads can support up to 463 HP

There's a lot more to heads than just combustion chamber size.

For heads to be able to support their rated HP levels, the rest of the engine also needs to do it. That means intake, exhaust, cam etc needs to be upgraded.

Re: head casting number?

I would love it if one of you guy's would take me to school, when it comes to cylinder heads and cams.
I just want to make some decent power nothing to crazy this is my daily.

Just a little side note I was thinking about parting my mustang out and using the fonds for a good top end kit for my 350. That would be one way to really make some power.
