Is there a Shorter version of SBC plugs for restrictive headers?
Hi,
Is there an NGK or similar product number for a shorter version of the spark plugs?
I have a set of AFR angled plug heads and to add to my ever-increasing list of build issues, I just checked and the plugs hit on my headers.
I can buy a set of block huggers that "MAY" clear it, but with a right hand drive transAM, I don't know if it'll clear the steering column.
I found these but its a bit expensive

I know the autozone has a box of "header" plugs but they claim to be semi universal so no clue on the heat range or gapping, that makes me leary of something like that. Doing some quick research I read that corvettes from the late 60's apparently used shorter plugs, could ask to look at them at a parts store to see if they will work for you before you buy

Accel has a line of shorty plugs. Here is an example

Make sure you get the right plug too. It may just be cheaper to rework the header to fit a bit better.

Just make sure that you have the correct heat range, and your depth. gap is nothing to worry about. easily changed.

Re: Is there a Shorter version of SBC plugs for restrictive headers?
Yup here you go. I got them dirt cheap on rock auto. .79 each
The box says 4208 on it
the plug has HR9BPX on them
They measure a total length of 2 3/4" and fit under my OBX LT's just fine with fat MSD wires.

Re: Is there a Shorter version of SBC plugs for restrictive headers?
So I've read up a little bit more on the plugs, and found out they need to be 3/4" reach to work properly with the AFR heads, and found a few sets that should match:
Autolite 393
NGK B7ES
The autolite looks to be the smallest so far, and looks like it would work, but I can't find any suppliers that will ship to Australia for a reasonable price, and the 393's also don't show up on the autolite site.
The heat range is probably a bit low, but I don't mind changing the plugs regularly so long as I can get a decent supply, and they have the right reach, but the plug hex is 13/16 instead of 5/8"s
Is that a problem if the thread is still 14mm?

As long as the thread and the seat are correct so you don't get any leaks then the hex size won't hurt anything. I've always been a fan of ngk for everything I can get them in.

Re: Is there a Shorter version of SBC plugs for restrictive headers?
Well I've got the original spark plugs that don't fit, so I'm off to the autoaprts store today to open all their boxes and see what will fit.
If that fails, dad sent me down a butane torch so I'll try heating the **** out of the header tube and bashing the crap out of it with a hammer.

Re: Is there a Shorter version of SBC plugs for restrictive headers?
I found the Bosch plugs are short enough to work with my 2210s. The next hard part is getting a tool in there to tighten them. I bought the crescent pass-thru ratchet set just for this.

Re: Is there a Shorter version of SBC plugs for restrictive headers?
I got the shortest ones I could find, but it wasn't enough.
Because of the angled plug heads i have to modify the headers.
Annoying as hell, but i guess it has to be done.
Already cut the problem parts out, just need to buy the bits of pipe to change the angle and get my mate to weld in.

those headers were made for straight plug cylinder heads. That's why you are having the issue

Re: Is there a Shorter version of SBC plugs for restrictive headers?
No issues with my Hooker 2210LTs. I had plenty of "fun" with my Hooker 2055 shorties.
With my 2210's a change takes about 30m assuming the engine is cool enough to touch. I'm using http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NGK-3951
With my old 2055's, I had to change the gaskets every plug change because the headers had to be loosened and pulled away from the head to get a spark plug in there. That was with full size plugs though.

...summit racing has these same shorty header spark plugs very cheap...believe me , they most of the time have parts for f-body ...and very cheap too. ..

Hi,
Is there an NGK or similar product number for a shorter version of the spark plugs?
I have a set of AFR angled plug heads and to add to my ever-increasing list of build issues, I just checked and the plugs hit on my headers.
I can buy a set of block huggers that "MAY" clear it, but with a right hand drive transAM, I don't know if it'll clear the steering column.
I found these but its a bit expensive
