new to the camaro world and new to working on my 84 berlinetta please help

Okay I recently bought a 84 berlinetta camaro auto transmission with 305 5.0v8 engine and so far ive been attempting to fix the car to become road worthy. It has 170 thousand miles on it and I don't know much about cars but I would love to learn and I'm 19. the car has a rough idle and i can hear a ticking noise near the carb and I can tell the timing is still a little off. when I first purchased the car I noticed it did not like to shift out of first gear unless I played with the gas petal and would hesitate to shift each next gear. I noticed the transmission was a quart low and I corrected that and did a oil change as it seamed like it was long overdue. I don't know how to set the carb and plan on removing emissions to allow more engine room for Wyoming has no emission laws and also plan on removing the a/c for ive never really use it on any of my cars over the years. I have a friend taking auto at our community college and trying to get idea on what parts to get and around what budget should be set. was planning on having him do an engine rebuild and a transmission rebuild to get this car reliable. But until he starts class ive been trying to get this car driving better so I can enjoy it before winter hits.

The ticking near the carb is actually in the carb. It's the mixture control solenoid which is mounted in the right hand side of the carburetor. It has two wires running to it. It is a duty cycle solenoid, which basically means that it constantly pulses or clicks while the engine is running to adjust fuel delivery. I would start by attaching a vacuum gauge to the intake at the PCV line or another full manifold vacuum source. Monitor engine vacuum during idle to look for a low or uneven vacuum signal. That is a clue to engine problems.

At 175K, the engine is due for an overhaul. To do it right you will need to tear it down and send it to a machine shop for block prep and to have the crank and rods resized and machined. If you think you will want to build the motor for performance, the machinist can help you with additional services and perhaps a better set of rods or even a forged crank to support the extra power.

As far as emmisions go, alot of the systems on your 84 probably no longer work. You can remove whatever you like. I would start with the AIR pump since it eats power and the cat nexct since it can fail and restrict exhaust flow. The EGR can come off too and be replaced with a block off plate.

thankyou for the info it was pretty dead on and now i have started a budget but my transmission is still acting up even after i got the engine timed and checked all fluids but it hesitates badly to shift out of each gear and i did not want to take it to the local tranny shop for their the biggest ripoffs and like to drag the project out to get more money. a couple of people i know that do alot of truck work are betting money on the tpi sensor but i can not for life of me find it online and have a very veage idea of what to look for and the tranny is leaking fluid today when i started it but the dipstick said it is fine. real head scratch-er. college is rolling around and my friend wants to know when he can use it as a project car but it just seams like the car hates me and i don't have the money for a new transmission and want it rebuilt but its above his skill level.

Check your TV cable for the transmission. It could be broken or mal-adjusted. Read this stuff:
