Car stalled, Gas pouring out bad from by fuel tank then stopped. Lines or Sender?
Hello..
I was driving along and started catching a whiff of gas here and there.. I kept going, get to a stop light and make a right, and the car starts chugging and wheezing. and Conks out.. I start it up, and am able to limp it into a close parking lot by feathering the gas pedal alot. I park it, and shut it off because its hardly running.
I get out and look under the hood and all seems well.
I light up a cig, and start walking around the car smoking, when I notice a big wet spot around the rear tire, I bend down and see gas spilling out from what looks like where the lines go up to the tank, I stuck my hand up there because I saw a few fittings and nuts, and the ones I grabbed were loose... (best as I can see bending down ) Needless to say my hand was soaked in gas.. I tired started it just to see what happenes.
When I turned the key I heared the fuel pump.. but it sounded different (maybe because the line(s) were broke. The car wouldnt start and just cranked, no gas obviously. I look under the car again and the leak stopped... I had a lot of gas in there, so If it was the tank.. it would have just kept going.
Do you guys think its just a burst / rusty fuel line, or the fuel sender.... Lines/tank/ and sender are all stock 88 v6 (may have been replaced by previous owner with oem parts if it broke already)
Theres a 255 LPH pump in the tank to feed the LT1..
I also added Carquest Octane boost 'With Lead Substitute' (said on back safe for new cars, safe for o2 sensors, and safe for catilytics!)
Could this have somehow caused the break or ate through my line.
It cant hurt the motor right? if anything I think itd be good for the valves

I read somthing about lead substitute clogging the fuel filter...
Any chance it clogged the fuel filter and blew the line?
I luckily have a new fuel filter in a box... Am I going to have to drain the gas tank
Looking at the prices of the sender unit... I am praying its not that!!!!

Sounds like a busted fuel line for sure....
when you installed the fuel pump, how did the lines look? You didnt do the shortcut access door did ya? Cause I would suspect one of the joints where you had to cut the lines failed if ya did.

i am flatbedding it down there now..
the fuel pump was put in by a backyard mechanic in the beginning even before the lt1 went in.
He is known for doing 'shortcut' jobs and I wouldnt be surprised if its a failure as a result of a jerry rig of his.
I had to re do EVERYTHING he did.. pull the motor, trans, motor mounts, wiring harness.. complete nightmare. I thought I had all his **** jobs fixed but this one was still lingering... i wouldnt be surprised if its held up by gum and a paper clip

First thing is douse that cig when working around fuel.
Old fuel lines rot away especially now with ethanol additives. Pump gas has upwards of 15% ethanol added to improve emissions and make companies rich with subsidies. I repalced my fuel lines under the hood because they were getting hard, which could lead to failure. Fittings underneath the car are sprayed with dirt, salt, rain and any other sort of nature's worst. They get old and break. It's a fact of life.
It may be just a broken fitting and like some one else said maybe a fuel line simply broke. Your gonna have to jack it up and get under there and have a looksee. And don't just cheap out and replace the broken one. If you have several, replace them all or you'll be doing this again soon.
Now regarding the octane boost. Why are you using it in the first place? What benefits do you think you'll gain from using it? If you want more power, put in a bigger engine.

I have the computer tuned for 94 + octane, I can only find 93 at the pump here, so I put it in to bring it up, or cam II when I find it
