Timing Help!

Timing Help!

ok so while back i had to replace my timing chain.
i ended up buying a gear n chain set. i put it on.
well the CAM gear i had some how turned counter clockwise
making the dot on the CAM gear 1 tooth to the right.
which put the CAM gear mark where the red dot was.

i put the chain on an just noticed it ..set the distrubiture
advanced an ran good just ran hella rich.


heres the picture.
Red dot = where the timing mark was at when i moved the cam gear when replacing chain/gears
Green dot = where i moved the cam gear back from the red position





now today i turned that CAM gear clock wise so it lined up
with the crank gear. replaced spark plugs n wires.
now the car wont start.

was i wrong in how i did this?..

if so how do i get it right?..

did i explain this so you understand?

The picture above has the camshaft at #6 TDC. Both dots need to be at the top for #1 TDC.

With both dots at the top, the rotor in the distributor should be pointing at the #1 plug wire terminal.

ok so turning the cam to match the bottom dot so its at 6 n 12 was ok?.

only thing left to check is i replaced the spark plugs n wires
maybe spark plug wires arnt seated on Cap fully ill check that in the morning
i had to stop working on car it started raining

Looks like when you replaced the set, the chain had ALOT of slop in it, thus allowing the cam to be significantly retarded.

Alky is right: "dot to dot", as shown in the pic, is the instance of #1 TDC where #1 is NOT firing. Rather, it's the end of the #1 exh stroke (exh valve just closing) and beginning of its int stroke (int valve just opening). Since #1 & #6 come to TDC together, it's also #6 firing.

To get to #1 firing from there, rotate the crank exactly one turn. Its dot will be back at 12:00 again. The cam will rotate exactly ½ turn, and its dot will also be at 12:00. At that point #1 & #6 will both be at TDC again, but this time, the #6 valves will be crossing over, and it will be #1 firing. Since the dist rotates at the same rate as the cam, it will also turn ½ of a turn; from the #6 plug tower to the #1.

The reason we assemble motors "dot to dot" is because it's easier to see accurately; NOT because it's #1 firing. You assembled that part right.

i had number 1 where number 8 is..

#1 can be anywhere on the cap. It all depends on where the rotor is pointing when you drop the distributor in. The most common location when looking at the distributor from the front is in the 5 o'clock position.

It's also very easy to mix up 5 and 7 plug wires because they are beside each other on the cap and the cylinder head.
