I currently have 2 3rdgens and have recently added an 4thgen trans am to the collection while im preparing to do the final bit of work on my Z28 to give it a bit more kick then its 305 TPI. After I get motor done and in I'll let you all know how well it faired. What I'm trying to do is get a decent build so it will at least "compete" with the Trans am on the street in a quarter mile. So input would be greatly appreciated from TPI/HSR guys on this one.
Trans Am 2000 with WS6 package
Stage 1 clutch
6spd (with what feels like a short throw in it)
exhaust dumps right after muffler about halfway in the car.
91 Z28 350 L98 from 89 GTA (305 sitting in the car atm)
T-5 with stage 3 clutch & short throw
3.73 gears
K&N airfilter
Flowtech headers & flowmaster 3'' exhaust w/cat delete (looking at probably going to hooker 2055 headers & Y pipe thru the flowmaster for now)
MSD 6A, MSD HEI coil, MSD distributor
underdrive pulleys
I'm wanting to do this on around a 1200 budget + 250 for the tune maybe more depending upon what I can come up with.
I am taking the heads off and having them ported and polished with a valve job and will be asking the shop what it takes to bring them down to a 62 or 60cc. Was then either thinking of having the TPI ditched in exchange for a HSR or keeping it and having it ported it some. was debating between 1.6 rockers or simply getting a more aggressive cam but one that will work with the heads currently on the car.
I don't expect for a build to put a hurting on the T/A but something that is at least formidable. Most of the 4thgens running around here are v6 & Lt1, only a few(and I mean ~5) LSx motors and those are almost all found in Z28s roaming this town behind autos.

That LS1 is putting down around 320 horses. Thats enough to rape any bolt on 350 tpi. Add the 1.6 rockers with better flowing heads and a bigger cam to level the playing feild, and go the HSR route.
You will need a more aggressive cam in the L98 to make it keep up with the LS1, I do not think 1.6 rockers with the other mods will be enough to make it compete.
$1200 wont get you much more than a stock rebulid(Key words "Much more") I hate to say it but your bets bet is to get some good rings a pistons put it together and juice it
The block and everything are actually in very good shape and low mileage compared to what I've seen. Has only 60k miles so imo its more then fresh enough to simply do the top end with for a mild build. What I figure I'm going to do is get the heads completely worked over like i said in the original post and drop an Lt1 cam into it (unless there a cam that is more aggressive that will work with the L98 iron heads, had thought of the LT4 hotcam but don't think the heads can handle the lift on the 1.5rr) with most likely a set of 1.6rr and a Holley stealth ram to top it off then take it the 220 miles by trailer to have it tuned at a dyno shop.
I figure it will be good for atleast maybe ~275-280whp if not a little bit more. More then enough silence the over populous mustang crowd around town and still put up some fight with an Lsx motor. and if the results don't impress me this summer then off with the heads and some afr will be put on it for next spring.

edit
I've actually thought about getting a loan for the remainder and actually doing an Lt4 hotcam with trick flow super 23 heads with the HSR and Hooker 2055 (alot better then the flowtechs some fool put on the 305) but I'm not sure what kinda power I'd be making with that combo. But that was kinda a thought always at the back of my mind. Just wanting to get it with some more kick and the motor in to go to Cruise Night in Kearney and make a few passes.
