It never ends lol!

This spring I did up the 8.8 hybrid rear and the C5 brake swap and figured I would just enjoy the car for a couple of years but... I have a low mile virgin 400 engine that is just begging to be built up and dropped in :lala:

... unless I find a good LS1 MM6 combo first

BTW George if you want to upgrade your brakes the C5 swap is incredible and if you shop around ( ebay, wreckers etc. ) the parts can be had very reasonably. PM me if you want more info/part numbers etc.

87roc_t56, Do you have any pictures of the new rear and brakes?
Did you use an Explorer axle to start?

What do you figure the total cost was for the brake swap with used parts etc??

The rear was a ton of work and I have been working towards making more but between work and trying to keep the woman happy its been tough. Heres the thread;

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...t=heres+my+8.8

And for the brakes

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...t=C5%2A+brakes

I bought the calipers off ebay which took a LOT of bidding and patience to get some for a good deal. With my Tool and Die friend we made the brackets from half inch mild steel. The total cost for front and back was about $900 Canadian which is still far less than a front only 12" kit from Bears and I got 13 inchers Everything is brand new save for the calipers but they were mint hardly used.

Its an incredible upgrade. The stopping power from speed still catches me off guard. When i'm blasting along the highway and have to slow down I still over brake out of habit by pushing too hard... hmmm?... Anyways they grip like a starving bear to spawning salmon

13" Baer front kit is about $1100 US dollars.

They use the old style 1LE PBR caliper though. The C5 brakes use the newer bigger and lighter generation PBR.

UPDATE!

Cam is fine... just a bad lifter.

So, now I still have to deal with the y-pipe issue but thats a spring project. For the winter I'm doing:

2400 lockup stall converter

Adjustable vacuum advance canister(I have 28* of vac adv at idle due to 9hg of vacuum at 900rpm!)

Converter lockup switch

190* auto fan switch

170* Thermostat

Thanks - brakes are something I have to do but I'm not sure when it's going to happen.

I'm reasonably sure that I'm going to do the motor this year and I'd like to get some safety equipment in the car as well maybe. Does your car still have the cage in it. I'm not sure what to do about installing one as there's some risk if you have an accident on the street - no helmet etc but at the same time to use a harness safely you have to have a cage.

There was an 88 Players car for sale in Markham for a long time, rebuilt 350, vette brakes and a lot of other stuff - I was seriously thinking about it but it was gutted and had a full nascar style cage - they wanted 10 for it and it was in really good shape although I think it sold for a lot less a few weeks ago. Anyway, it's gone now.

Sadly the cage is long gone from my car. It was removed right after it was retired from racing for street use. I will likely be replacing it though. I think I know of the Markham car you speak of I saw it advertised in the buy&Sell. I know of a very sweet 89 GTA Players car that has only 15k kms on it too but the owner won't sell it. No cage in it either. I did see another 88 ex Players Iroc at the Thornhill cruise last year that was pretty clean. Had the Vette brake conversion but was not a factory 1LE but it had the cage and all. I think the price was reasonable too. I had a printout of it and his contact info but cannot recall if i turfed it out or not. If I find it I will send you the info.

Here's the one I was refering to:

http://www.mmcg.com/camaro.htm

Looks nice but I don't think it could be licensed for the road w/out some work and trailering it would have added a lot to the cost.

There's a few Player's cars around but a lot of them have been badly bent and don't line up. I'm at a point with my car where it's how much more to spend on it or get something for track use only. If I do the motor though that will be it because I'll have too much into it and buying another car will be out of the question.

Yeah I have seen that page before. It does look solid enough but I agree that it is looking pretty from street legal... I wonder how you would explain to a cop why there are no headlights

The owner of Legendary Motor Cars in Milton is the guy from Dream Car garage Peter Klute on Speedvision and he has his 88 Iroc that he ran in the Players series for sale but like this one it looks to be pretty far from street legal. I think its still out there... yup here it is
http://www.legendarymotorcar.com/inv...camaro_rc.html

Too bad its not a 1LE though.

I think a lot of the A4U cars had Brembo brakes on them before the R7U / 1LE cars arrived. That one looks to be in rough shape though.

Have a look at this one. It is or was for sale in the US:

I baought the markham Players car

I bought the 1988 players car that was in Markham.
It has the 1LE brakes on it. Not all Players cars had the PBR brakes. It has a good racing heistory too. Never has been liscensed for the street after the series.

I am VERY excited about next season. I run SOLO 1 in Ontario and hope to do a couple of GT events too.

I live up near Barries, ON. the local Jaguar british garage guy ran a Players series camaro. He thiks he still has roll cage for one. If you are interested and I'll find out if he still has it.

take care

winter project

I need to do some tyding of wirng etc on my car, corner weight it and get a dyno plot for classificatrion in SOLO 1.

every thing else is new on the car. the only part that hasn;t been rebuit or replaced recently is the rear end.

I ran a Jaguar XJS last year in SOLO 1 but I wanted a track only car so I sold the jag and bought a fully preped race car. I drove the big track at Mosport this year wow what a rush!!!!!!!!!!
can;t until this year in the IROC!!!!!!!!!!!! Turn 2 is MAJOR pucker factor!!!!!!

Looking forward to next year!!

Sweet welcome to the club. I would like to hear if your friend still has the cage and what he wants for it if possible. PM me with any info you get if you don't mind. Thanks for the heads up. I'm gonna have to get out to the track next year for sure... no more excuses

racing and roll cage

check out SOLO 1 at www.soloontario.com it is very reasonable, approx $110-120 per event, fun, great people. you can be as competitive as want or chose not to be. the biggest exspense are brake pads. 1-3 sets per year of racing pads. and maybe a set of rotors per year.
All you need is a helmet. A roll cage/bar is not required.
We have an open house at CSC in Newmarket usally at the eand of march.

i will check and see about the roll cage.

thanks for the welcome

I think your car was down at Carlisle last year for sale..it was super clean.
As with all the other vehicles for sale, price was too high then.
Solid buy!

Anything special about the engine?

pictures

the engine is a 60 over 350. so approx 360 CUI. Around 280 -300 HP, I haven't dynoed it yet. nothing speical, 4 bolt main truck motor, mild cam , reliable!!!! I didn't build it was already done, TPI no cat, large exhaust, no headers. it is fresh less than 2 hoursof run time on it. very good throttle response.

I amy do some more work next year. I want to warok on setting up the suspension first.

I have to get my number on it and the graphics cahanged. more winter stuff to do!!.

here are some pitures too.

Steve - good luck with the new car. I remember reading some of your posts on casc last year about the jag. Maybe see you at some S1 events next year. I was going to run a few this year but after April my shedule got screwed up and I was lucky to get in the few lap days that I did. Yep - corner 2 is a lotta fun.

If you don't already know about it check out frrax.com - i's a site mainly with people who race f-bodies. There's a few people on there from Ontario. You're not by any chance a member at Ontario Race Fabrications are you; it's close to where you live; I joined it but never got there as a result of a lot of screw-ups this year.

So, yeah - looking forward to next year.

Welcome to the board Steve. Nice track car. I've slowly been converting my car over to be solo1 worthy. Still lots to do however before I'm happy. I should have just gone the route you did and bought a players car... seen a few for sale in the last couple years that all looked good.

I see yer off to a good start already as it looks like you have Koni Sports up front for dampers. Have anything special planned for your chassis/suspension setup?

It has Koni yellow sports all around and AF Coil springs approx. 800 in the front and 300 in the rear. I will measure them when I adjust the ride height, corner weight, and align the car. It also has threaded height adjusters ala NASCAR. But you have to unlaod the springs to adjust them.

the Players cars had harder that factory bushings already and this car still has them, alot has been replaced over the years. I will probably go with an adjustable panhard bar so I can center the rearend as needed. Maybe more next year.

It just needs some tyding up to my level of preparedness a weekend or 2 and it will be track ready.

the best thing about SOLO 1 is you can run anything you brung to the track. Your first year is such a learning curve with the car and track, but lots of fun!!!! so bring it out!!

CASC usually has a deal where you can do one event for $100 as a sort of try it out thing to get more people involved.

Your setup is quite close to mine!(see sig.).

I have Spohn's adjustable panhard bar on my car. He offers a few different options for ends(poly/poly, rod/poly, rod/rod) and I think he may even offer a chromoly version as well. Not sure if its any lighter than the steel one tho.

One note on the Koni's up front. Pay attention to them carefully with such a high front rate. They probably wont last more than a couple years before they need a rebuild if you're racing every weekend. They can be revalved mind you.

I just checked out the SOLO sight and noticed your profile on there Steve. Its A4U... not R4U where you have the car listed R7U was the option code for 89 and up Players cars and A4U was for 88 and down. I may just have to go and check out both of the CASC and SOLO events next year. Thanks for the links guys... BTW sorry to the other guys for kind of hijacking this thread! Man it sure is SMOKIN hot though

We have a few people on here that are interested. Once the event schedules are posted for next year we should try and set up a day when everyone can attend at an S1 race - that way we would have maybe quite a few thirdgens there. The biggest thing is that car is is safe - it doesn't have to be overly raced prepped or anything like that. The main thing is to get started on the learning curve and then mod the car if and when you can.

Yeah i've noticed the Ontario board is kind of silent for the most part.

Anyways your idea of getting organized sounds good to me. I am running a t-roof car though with no cage do you think that will be a problem? I just started restoring my Players car and likely won't have it ready by next season but my 87 is prepped up pretty decent aside from the tired mill. I am working on building a new one but it still runs okay and is completely ready as is. Brand new tires and brand new brakes.

I don't think that is a problem but I'm not 100% sure - easy enough to find out though. I see people with t-roofs at laps days all the time and it's basically the same thing as S1 - verts are another matter.

As for the tired mill I think I got everyone beat on that - my motor is a POS and blows oil smoke in a big way so hopefully that'll be swapped out by next year.

That's the plan. I get a discount with some dealers up to 30% through TFBM but with the exchange rate right now it might be cheaper to bring a ZZ4 in from the US - could be other problems with going that route though.

When I'd get on it coming out of turn 2 on the downhill part the oil smoke was just pouring out. They guy following me said that he thought the motor let go..lol. Could also see the marshal at the next corner having a good look at the car with binoculars - must have thought it was on fire. Anyway, I just eased up a bit on that section and it wasn't so bad - but this motor has to go.

Thats what I've got

350 SP 300 horse bought new at the local dealer. After five seasons 25k kms and some hard use though shes a little tired. Got a mild case of the blues and losing the snap it once had. Still fast but I am my own worst enemy and want everything to work flawlessly... Ah the endless pursuit You don't even want to know how many times my car has been finally "done"... Ah the truth is I love building stuff so I always dream up new projects. If I live to 100 I won't be able to finish half of what I already have planned. At least I only start what i know i can finish

The new engine should be pretty wicked though. I have the short block. 400 virgin core that only had 70k kms on it. Just trying to decide how far i want to go with it and whether or not to stay naturally aspirated or go for a power adder... I dare not say it on this board again cause it seems as if every other post has the words "turbo" in there but its hard to argue the potential and the rest of my car could take 800 horse so who knows what I will do. If its gonna be boosted then it will be a two year build plan but if its going antural aspirated it should be done by spring.

George I think the ZZ4 is overpriced and underpowered. The 350 HO is rated at 330 horse but is a far better deal ( half the price ) and in fact probably got more power than the ZZ4 they just don't market it that way. Besides with the ZZ4 you get a lot of expensive dealer priced parts that you could reuse from your stocker such as distributer/balancer/carb/intake etc. The "factory stock" 350 HO racing crate engine is absolutely identical to the regular 350 HO internally but it uses a high rise intake and is rated at 350 horse. Only five off the ZZ4. So if you bought the HO and put a performer RPM on her and presto 350 horse. That is if you are planning on going carb?

I would freshen it up, new rings and bearings, check verthing over an drun it some more while you build the KILLER motor!!
Thats all race teams do, we just tend to do it FURTHER apart instead of everyother race etc.

If I go for the turbo plan thats exactly what I will do is freshen up the crate engine and run it while I build the other. By the way I sent you a PM Steve.

There's nothing on my stock motor that I'd want to re-use and I'm fairly sure that a performer rpm won't clear my hood. If I was going to get 330HO I'd get the one with the carb and all - but it's only $300 USD less than the ZZ4 which comes with everything but a carb. Ain't none of them too cheap though but I'm reluctant to get anything built - it's fine if it works but if it doesn't then there can be problems with the 30 feet or 30 seconds warranty..lol
