I remember hitting one of those giant dragon flies up there in Thunder Bay. It went "Whap" on the windshield. I was about to put on the wipers to scrape it's carcass off the windshield when it picked itself up, gave me the finger and flew off! ;-)

Well... the day has finally come....MY CAR STARTED UP!! I'm a wiring genius! after all the rewiring..... At first try, it seemed to want to start, but then just click.. click.. clicked.. then a shot of gas down the carb,.. hook up the 'ol booster cables and charged it with the truck for 15 minutes,.. and.. VROOOM! now,.. I'll just set the timing, (water pump leaks through the bottom weep hole like a siv,.. maybe that's why the rad was empty? ha.. ha.. Now it's garage clean up time, and drive the MARO right on in!...it is "RESTORATION TIME" FOLKS,..WISH ME LUCK, AND I'LL START MY OWN LINK/THREAD soon thanks Knottybuoys.. you're great friends to have here on "TGO"...ISMO.

This thread started with a look at the wiring mess I've got to deal with. Sorta got sidelined with other projects but I'm back to the wiring. Having some trouble figuring out the strange symptoms my OEM stereo is exhibiting. See the other thread.
Still waiting for parts for the other parts of the project......

Re: My project has begun....
Ya know, life really suks sometimes. Yet another setback. Tranny in '99 Jimmy went for a crap last night. Just had it rebuilt 2 yrs ago and it appears it's toast again. It's not like I drive the sh*t outta the thing, mostly highway driving to work and back. Are these transmission that flimsy?
Just waiting for parts to arrive then I can get the Camaro on the road for the summer at least.

Re: My project has begun....
I had a '96 that is thankfully costing someone else tons of cash now. I had a transmission blow up after 5000km on a fresh rebuild. There is a seal between the trans proper and the rear transfer case. It is technically not part of the transmission (or so Mr. Transmission says). Anyhow, if the seal is cooked, the fluid from the trans gets into the transfer case, fills it, and gets spit out the vent tube of the transfer case, allowing your trans to go dry and chew itself to pieces. Mine went to far as to destroy the pump housing along with the rest of the trans. I bought the Jimmy from the trany shop as a 'used' car with a freshly rebuilt trans (by them). However, when it blew up, they told me it as a used car, so tough. Of course, they only told me this AFTER the truck was on the hoist and the trans was on the floor.
Was the trans dry when it blew up?

I now know how to take apart and put back together a hatch pull-down assembly. *sigh* Parts on order $$$
On the brighter side I got the trailer hitch on the kid's Jeep. It was a bit of a job. My piddly a$$'d 5 gal compressor & cheapy impact wrench just wasn't up to the task. That's his b'day present I guess!

Re: My project has begun....
Progress is measured in small steps. Fabricated some mounting brackets out of angle alum. Took 10 mins. At least I can put this part of the project to bed and move on.
Other than the mini-jack you'd never know this wasn't 100% OEM. The clean signal from the MP3 player sounds pretty good even with crapped out old speakers. I've got a set of Infinity Kappa's for the front and am looking at a matching set on e-Bay for the sail panels. That'll be it for audio upgrades this year. I'd like to add an amp & sub next year. Need to focus efforts on getting this thing on the road. Still waiting for some key parts though! *sigh* Standby....

Re: My project has begun....
Hey Dodgy
The color could be any of these according to the PRO codes.
74U PRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, CARDINAL RED (HOLDENS) (02)
74U PRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, PALAZZO RED (02) HOLDEN
74U PRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, POPPY RED (01) (OPEL)
74U PRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, RICH RED (HOLDENS 02)
74U PRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, TIZIAN RED MET2 (02) (OPEL)
74U PRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, VICTORY RED (02)
IIRC the color was called "Flame Red" in the brochure.

Yup. E-bay seller "Thorig". Good guy, stands behind his products and helped me through the wiring issues. He's got two more up on auction now. Now that it's installed it's highly unlikely I'm gonna yank it out and take it apart, sorry! Knowing my luck I'd screw it up totally. No sense tempting fate!

Re: My project has begun....
Not quite there just yet. Got the frame section today. I'll prep it for welding and get it to the shop next week. I know it's going to need emergency brake cables but what else I'm not sure. They guy who's doing the welding is also a mechanic so he'll safety check it at the same time. Hopefully we'll be on the road in 10 days to two weeks.

Re: My project has begun....
Did my first dashpad R&R today. Pulled out a crapped out pair of Clarion's
and installed the Kappa's.
The 6X9's for the sail panels should be in next week. The improvement in the front channels was impressive for an old OEM deck.
Also R&R'd the tail lights which were all cracked & split. Cleaned it out and it's ready to go to the shop for welding & safety check. Won't be long now!

Re: My project has begun....
So I've actually been a little afraid to do this till now. I hope the ole' lady doesn't read this but here's a "guestimate" of what I've put into this thing already. These numbers don't include US currency conversion, shipping, or taxes....
Battery $110.00
Hood struts $30.00
Distributor cover $25.00
Fan switch $32
Windshield washer pump $40.00
Motorvation Stage II chip $75.00
Hush panels $50
Infinity Kappa 4x6 speakers $35.00
OEM Stereo w/Mini-Jack (MP3) $150.00
Stereo pig-tail $10
Steering Wheel $100.00
'99 Camaro seats (F&R) $315.00
Drivers side seat belt buckle $22.00
Door top plastic rails $51.00
Infinity Kappa 6x9 speakers $80.00
Console lid $30.00
Owners Manual $55.00
Cigarette lighter $10.00
Ashtray spring Freebee $0.00
Hatch Struts $35.00
Strut covers $10.00
Cargo shade $51.00
Hatch motor gear $10.00
Trim panel screws & nuts $15.00
OEM lug nut locks $40.00
Spare tire hardware $11.00
Tire inflator $25.00
IROC mud flaps $35.00
Car cover $50.00
Rear sub-frame section $60.00
Sub-frame connectors $200
Trailing arms $105
Magna Flow 3" Cat-back $450.00
Muffler Hangers $50
Insulation $32.00
Stripe Kit $120
Consumables & shop supplies $300.00
Grand total $2,819.00
So if you add another 25% for exchange, shipping & taxes the total would be a little over $3500.00*
Note: I took the welder & tools out of the estimate.

I've reached what I believe is a milestone (at least the ole' Lady thinks so). Other than the seats which will go in the car on final assembly I have "NO" parts left in my living room! They're all installed on or in the car!!!
See the list below, that stuff sat in the living room for quite awhile. There are a few lil' things that can't go in the car until after the smog check, Motorvation chip, thermostat & fan switch but they don't count!

congrats, I'm still plugging away on an 86 iroc clone after 2 yrs, i'm just about ready to go get a tank of gas and take it around the (country) block. Gonna bring my cell phone just in case though. If you don't mind my asking, where did you find door top rails for $51. Best I could find was a place in Georgia for $125.

If you don't mind my asking, where did you find door top rails for $51. Best I could find was a place in Georgia for $125.
I got them off of e-Bay. Seller ID chevy-man7700. I nabbed them and the roller shade at the same time. It's all about timing and constantly looking. One trick I use is to change the order of the listings when I search. Use the "Sort By" option and select "Time: Newly Listed". Then you can spot the stuff that's just gone up and if you're lucky you can get some deals with "Buy It Now" or just keep watching the auctions.

Yeah I've got a couple of new nit-picks like sail panels and door panels but those will have to wait till next year. I'm hoping a good steam clean will brighten them up just a bit for now.

Re: My project has begun....
Update: The Ole' Girl and I went for a ride in the IROC tonight. I got the temp permit so we can move the car around to get the work done on it. She actually took me out to dinner! Bonus! Next week it'll be in the shop all week getting prepped for safety check.
Issues I see from tonight's test drive that'll need to be addressed for safety check.
The other good news I got tonight when I got the permit is there's no smog test required on this age car! Wohooooo! That's a big relief.
I dropped a screwdriver tip into the dash when I put the new speakers in. Now it rattles! Gonna have to go fishin' for that.
$50 in Premium (91 octane) to fill the lil' pig up!
Won't be long now. Standby.....

- Steering. Slight pull to the right. Alignment likely required.
- Brakes. Pull to left, probably seized caliper. Brakes are brand new so should just need a good cleaning.
- Something grinding in the right rear wheel. Dust shield maybe.
- Emergency brake. Doesn't work. Likely seized up.

Just a random picture from my project collection.
In this picture we see some of the stuff I've recently added:
Stereo w/MP3 jack: e-Bay seller "Thorig"
Console lid: ThirdGen.org member "Dave MC"
Steering wheel: ThirdGen.org member "Dave MC"
Seats: e-Bay seller "FParts"
Door top rails: e-Bay seller "chevy-man7700"
They all get a big...

It's a very rare occasion when I let someone take my picture. Usually I'm the one behind the camera. This was one of those special occasions I guess.
Yes I was grinning so hard I thought my face was going to crack!
It'll never be a showpiece but it's mine.

Re: My project has begun....
Ahhhhhhhhh! 18 years and many thousands of dollars and we've had our first night out with the IROC. The ole' girl and I took a little tour to Brockville (a local city) and cruised into the A&W for a burger & root beer!
Just waiting for one more brake line and the safety is done. That'll happen Tuesday.
Tomorrow I get to put the whole interior back together which I'm looking forward too 'cause I haven't seen all the seats installed yet. The only stumbling block is a seat track for the passenger side but a quick run to the junk yard should fix that!

about that little plate on the console, it's something with "Overdrive." I'll check for the exact phrase.

Re: My project has begun....
Most of the interior is back together. Just one door cap and the plastics for the drivers seat to go.
All the speakers have been replaced with Infinity Kappa's. Sounds good. Left rear seat belt won't retract. Need screws to mount the hush panels. Still looking for a white globe for one if anybody's got one kicking around.
Gettin' there!

Re: My project has begun....
The next project is going to be a lot more involved. We've been planning to build our next boat for the last 5 years. My basement is full of parts so that when we do start we won't have to chase down stuff. Got a lot of deals which will make the project a little more economical, if I can use that word.
This is what it will look like....
The original design is 28'. We're planning on stretching it to 31 1/2' for more living space. It'll be built in stitch & glue plywood & fiberglass but I'm considering basalt fabrics instead, cheaper, stronger, lighter. Not that it matters this is a displacement hull and will have a top speed of about 8 knots. That's just about 9 MPH for you fella's!
