What could cause this, On my new engine with the LT1 intake, it SMOKES ALOT. Come out the breather, if I pop off the PCV it smokes from there, also w/ the oil filler cap too. If all of them are on, smaller ammount s come out from around the rubber gasket for the valve covers. Also if I open up any of them, it seems pretty loud inside the valve covers. Its not loud like hurt your ears, but there is more noise then there should be.
It doesnt come out the exhaust at all, except maybe a little little bit on start-up, so I dont believe that it is bad rings in the new engine.
Part of my problem may be my LT intake, its all I can think of. I think John my have made if for the wrong head style, When bolted on the two center most bolts on each side are fine. But the other bolts all screw into the head fine, but the head of the bolt is almost at a 45 degree angle (maybe less) to the intake, But it seems like it seats against the heads at the correct angle.
Do you think possibly its not sealed and possibly causing oil to get somewhere it shouldnt?
if ya was getting oil in the cylinders from blowby the exhaust would smoke all the time.......... it sounds like the rings aren't seated and your getting a little more exhaust not oil blowby than normal...

is it using any oil???
It hasnt been on the road yet, and hasnt been run for more then a couple of minutes, so I'm not sure if its used any oil, havent even checked it again yet. so are you saying that this might even be OK or normal? It seems like more smoke then there should be, especially if its revved.
you will defanantly get a little more exhaust blowby before the rings seat properly...........
but if it don't smoke constantly out the exhaust i wouldn't say it's oil.....
did you find out where the noise was coming from???
a noise like a knock wouldn't cause one to burn oil........ like if ya spun a rod bearing, you cant burn oil because of it..... the motor is still sealed......
i still think it's excessive blowby due to the rings not seated.....
try to get about 500 miles on it and if it still smokes you got problems........
possible valve cover leaking???

It hasnt been driven on the road at all yet, all that has been done to it is that it was started up and let run at around 2k for 10 minutes or so, then since then there have been a bunch of start-ups but none have resulted in running it for more than 5 minutes. The smoke has scared us.
Do you guys recommend driving it to see what its like?
A trusted mechanic that I know mentioned that it could be something like, the oil rings seated, but the compression rings havent yet and that could cause it, he said to put some miles on it and see.
Buddy you need to get some miles on the motor. What you're seeing is the rings not seated yet. Drive it to a parking lot (empty) and do some accelerations and stops. Vary speeds obtained from 10-50 mph. DO NOT RIP ON IT!!!!ie. no spinning tires, no slideing sideways.(Drive like a grandma). Accelerate 10-15 times. After that drive easily for the first 500 miles. Change the oil and go have fun. Drive it the way you're going to drive it everyday. If you're going to spin the tires at every light, then do it. If after that it still smokes....I'll give you $25.
I would definatly run it some more, and check the valves, if they are correct they are correct, the worst you'll be out is a little time. I had smoke come from my valve covers when I had them too tight, the exhaust valves weren't closing properly.

Ummm....is this a flat tappet cam or a roller? If its a flat tappet, the cam isn't even broke in yet. You need to run it at 2K to 3K for 20 mins or so to break it in. Its not unusual for a "new" motor to smoke for a while, but it should stop after a while.
