Charcoal Canister Question
I just replaced my fuel pump and now I smell gas in a bad way. Also, the car runs like ***. So, the only thing I can figure is that maybe I switched the return line with the charcoal canister line. I know it is a stupid idea, but would this cause the car to run roughly? I just cannot think of what else it could be. Also, would it even matter when reconnecting them if they were backwards? I know these are some amatuer questions, but I cannot think of any other thing that would cause the car to run poorly after the swap and all I can smell is gas.
Thanks
Tim

Is the gas smell stronger in the front of the car or at the rear of the car. Also, have you looked under the car to see if there are any fuel leaks?

Yeah, it is stronger at the fron than the rear. There are no leaks, it only smells when the car is running and shortly after shutting it off.

The return line dumps the excess fuel down further in the tank than the canister line (as you are aware that is simply a vent for the tank so it will vent through charcoal instead of the atmosphere) .
The charcoal line is smaller in diameter and you probably would have noticed that. About the only thing switching them would do would create back pressure that would increase the fuel pressure.
Have you checked your fuel pressure? Is it running rich or lean at idle?
As stated I would check the regulator first.
Did you do ANY other stuff when you had the tank out?
