This is a good one......

I was working on my car last night when I decided to replace the thermostat with a 160* instead of the 195* that was in there.

Everythings going well until I notice one of the waterneck bolts is giving a hard time. So I soak it in penetrating oil, followed by a little heat from the torch.

OOPS! broke it off in the manifold

Now I'm on my way to go try and EZ out the thing.

Wish me luck.

Any advice?

dont brake the bolt extractor, very, very hard to drill through. Ended up drilling and tapping a new hole right next to it.

Well guys....the co(ksucker won't come out

I tried WD40, I tried heating it, I tried EZ outing it, I tried drilling it but the bolt is hardened.

I am going to have to take the intake off...too bad I don't have the $$ for a good cam while I'm at it.

The good part is I ported the plenum the other day, now i'm going to do the lower when I get it off.

Milan is a little too crowded for me. I personally prefer Ubly Dragway in Bad Axe. Its just about as far for me as Milan, and you can get in more runs and the tech inspection is somewhat less extensive.

In my neck of the woods, Ubly is the only track that I like.

Short tech inspection, short waits in the staging lanes, and a good prepped track surface is what keeps me coming back.

I will be going in the next few weeks when I get my car back on the road.

I have never been to the bad axe dragway. Milan is getting a little crowded, though I have never seen a long tech inspection there, even when I worked there in high school. I took my car there on opening day in april and my car went 15.0's, needless to say I was very unhappy since I was expecting 14.3's. I found out a couple of weeks ago that the catalyst had plugged up the exhaust so I will be going back as soon as it cools down.

Update:

Well guys...after drilling for a while...I got the EZ-out to bite the bolt.

Afterheating the manifold and the bolt, I proceeded to crack the ear off the manifold. At least I got the bolt out

It left enough of it ( 2/3's) so that I could JB Weld it back together.

So here I am, waiting for the JB Weld to set up.

Back at it Sunday. The Gratiot Cruise is Saturday

See ya

hey guess what, i decided to change my 195 to a 180 with four 1/8th inch holes drilled in it, and what happened? well u guessed it the back bolt of the t-stat housing broke off, so now there is a 3/8 in peice of bolt sticking out of the manifold, and iam racking my brain trying to figure out how to get it out, lucky me..... any ideas help, sympathy ... i am thinkin i might be able to put a nut on it and then weld the nut, and heat it up ,and pull it out, what u guys think??

How much of its sticking up?

If theres enough for vise grips, just keep soaking it in WD40 then after a day or so of that, heat it with a propane torch and try backing it out.

If theres not enough left for vise grips, then use a centerpunch, mark the center of the bolt, and then start drilling it with a small bit.

Drill until you hit bottom. Then go back and re-drill with a bigger bit, almost as big as the stuck bolt.

Now take a punch and break the remainder of the bolt in pieces. This is how I got mine out.

I got everything back together and just have to go and put the upper rad hose back on and fill it with coolant.

It was a PITA, but after all that work it'll be back on the road finally.

I got to do a few things also while it was apart. I ported the plenum, cleaned the throttle body, and learned a lesson.....

I can now take the upper plenum off a TPI car in less than 10 minutes, including the throttle body and linkage.

Thanks for all the input.

Hope I could be of some help too.....

87,

Welding a nut to the stud might work, but the welding process will anneal the bolt, and more likely than not you'll twist off the newly welded nut due to the soft steel.

Instead, another option would be to grind or file the stud flat on top, center punch the stud, then drill and tap new 5/16-18 threads. If the tap gets tight, back off and clear out the hole. If you can't retap to the 5/16-18 size, drill the hole to allow a 7/16-14 tap (3/8" drill) or 1/2-13 tap (27/64" drill), tap the hole, and install a steel Jergen's thread insert with a 5/16-18 inner thread. You won't need a special Heli-Coil tap or installation tool, and won't ever have to worry about the fragile Heli-Coil insert wire spring getting fudged up. The inserts are a whopping two bucks each.

On a side note, don't any of you people believe in anti-sieze compounds yet? Or are you going to continue to snap off bolts in aluminum for the rest of your lives? Just askin'...

Mine was a STOCK 195 thermostat. Looks like its never been changed

I replaced it with a 160* with 4 1/32 holes in it.

Surprisingly, no nasty buildup was in the coolant passage. Very clean. Then again, I have maintenence records that show the original owner flushed it every spring.

ok welding the nut on didnt work, so i went and got some mean a$$ drill bits, and drilled it out, goin from 1/4 up to 2 sizes before 3/8 , ran a 3/8 tap into it, and put a nice factory size bolt in with no probs, and no leaks, it is still a mystery to me , how i got it to stay the same size, but who cares, it worked!!, and i also know how to remove the upper plenum and throttle body within a few minutes, and yes anti-seize is now part of my life....
