1987 L98 HP/TQ #'s

Hello, I have a question some of you more seasoned TPI guys may be able to help me with. I recently put TPI on my 87 Monte Carlo SS and installed it on the original L69 305. I really like the way it improved it's performance/drivability but of course I'm like everyone in this hobby and I eventually would like MORE!
I have a 87 L98 w/94,000 miles on it that I would like to install in it possibly by next summer after I get my 200 4R trans freshened up over the winter. I know alot of you are probably pretty partial to the 700 R4 trans, but I think I can have good luck with keeping the 200 4R after I get it freshened up.

Anyways, my question is:
What can a person do to up the HP number on the L98?
I don't think getting 225 HP out of a 350 cubic inch motor is all that impressive considering the LB9 gets I think 215. I do like the 330 ft/lbs of TQ though
Is there something that 'holds' these motors back as far as HP numbers? I am looking for any input some of you may have. Thanks in advance.
5.7 (350)225@4400 HP330@2800 TQ

Read the sticky"Our quest for a better flowing TPI". It seems to be looking for the same answer you are.

Re: 1987 L98 HP/TQ #'s

Ok thanks. I'm fairly new to TPI engines. I realize thay aren't the best as far as airflow, but I wasn't sure that would cause a 350 ci motor to only get 225 HP when at the same time it was getting 330 ft/lbs TQ.
Didn't know if someone may blurt out "hey you need to change the stock cam...." or something to that effect. Oh well, I'm gonna live with it by doing whatever I can to the stock parts since aftermarket TPI stuff is SOOO rediculously priced IMHO. It is aluminum, not GOLD.

Re: 1987 L98 HP/TQ #'s

if you pull off the lower intake and port it out, theres alot to be removed, it will be better on top end hp but the real restriction is the length of the runners.....shorter better top end like the slp's. You can always get an HSR for $400-500 used for intake and fuel rails.

Re: 1987 L98 HP/TQ #'s

I'm in the process of 'helping' my stock TPI components as far as flow goes at this very momment.
I,so far, have removed the 'walls' inside the front entrance to the plenum, smoothed out the 'lines' inside both ends of the runners where the actual runner tube meets the mounting flange, and I do want to do whatever I can to help the intake base flow a little better. I am going to spend some time looking through the "quest for better flowing" post mentioned above. I'm not sure if I'll be able to actually remove material the whole way through the ports on the base, but I'd guess that even removing some of the material to help smooth the intial entrance to the base should help a little.
Does anyone know if that would hurt anything by smoothing that area in the base as far as if wether or not it will effect airflow in a bad way? I know that may seem like a dumb question, but I was just wondering if it is set up with the little 'bumps' for creating a certain airflow characteristic, instead of having them be a smooth 'funnel in' shape right from the factory. Thanks so far for the input guys, any other input is welcome. Thanks.
