yea, there are plnety of options available as far as solenoids, and really this thread has moved FAR from the original subject, that being : the EGR temperature switch is no longer available.

Since I orginally started the thread. I am ok with the fact that it has moved past it's original topic because it has accomplished so many useful things. Here's a summary.
1. EGR Temp switch discontinued. But after unleashing the third gen org community in a national search and several months later a member finds a source on Ebay selling old inventory of the part. (I now have the part I need thanks to third gen org members)
2. Once the old inventory is depleted on the temp switch we have come up with viable solutions for creating a replacement part.
3. We also discovered the EGR solenoid is discontinued and inturn came up with a good list of part applications that we can substitute in it's place.
Overall, I deem the thread a sucess. Thanks everyone for taking part.
Also just as a side note I came across an 87 IROC that had the old style cal pack connector on the solenoid. So the switch over on the solenoid connector may have occured mid year in 87. Just check your connector first.
I too have used the ebay site that was found, and I have three sensors on the way. 1 to replace my failed one, and 2 spares for the two 1987 Camaros that are sitting in my garage. 1987 Iroc, and a 1987 Z-28, both are 305 TPI 5 speeds. The egr solenoids can be had at Ecklers Camaro/Corvette for $73.99 albeit they are for the LT1 motors in the 93-96 Camaro, and 92-96 Corvette, but I'm sure they will work!!!

Looks like this is the one you are referring to at Ecklers.
It uses the metri pack connector on the 88 and newer cars and the vac ports are in the right place just the bracket is a little different. That looks to be the closest one I have seen. Good call.
Older TPI cars 85,86, and some 87 will just have to adapt the plug with this harness.
again, yes the vette one is pretty damn close, BUT the cadillac one is 20 bucks cheaper AND confirmed to work (metripack) and is also pretty damn close, i personally choose the cadillac one
Well if you really believe global warming is a threat (and it sounds like you do), then do your part by selling your third gen to reduce emissions. No sense in being a hypocrite.
Whenever a volcano erupts, it spews forth thousands of times more ozone depleting "stuff", than we do, in the same given time period. Granted they only erupt occasionally. How about this... China and India's middle class is just up and coming. The amount of cars being sold in China is staggering, not to mention the pollutants from all the factories there. India is next as far as growing car sales. Their emission standards there are a joke. Unless EVERYBODY (that means everybody in the world) does something to reduce emissions, nothing good will ever come of it.
Perhaps we could commit mass genocide, as a species, to save the Earth?
I am going to keep driving my third gen and two Corvettes until they are unable to be driven. I guess if I live long enough, there might be legislation passed that bans internal combustion vehicles and then they might be forcibly taken away from me.

K so I didnt read all so sorry if I missed this one. But where is the "Exhaust Temp Sensor" on the tbi cars? Also while I am here does a leaking manifold gasket cause code 32? The leak is on the drivers side. Took the car to the shop and they said no that it would effect the O-2 reading though. Any input to how well informed I am on that?
I finally ordered a vacuum pump with a gauge today (ebay) so I should be able to test. I have never had one so I have just basic ideas of how to test the system. I can take the hose off the egr and add vacuum while at the same time looking for what to happen? Maybe I need to take it off? What about the egr vac controller? How would I test that with the vac pump?
I have had this trouble code for 4 years and get the same problems with drive ability that many have posted. Starts then dies, high idle, runs like crap, Very bad mpg from running rich, smells lol. Its a shame to cause the motor is new.
Maybe the posters on this thread can help me? The car came with a rebuilt Marshall motor (like Jasper). The egr I pulled off the motor may not even be the right one (I posted about this before and no replies).
I had parted a 89 rs same car as mine with the same motor and the egr that came off my car wasnt flush where the egr mounts to the intake. It had a round spacer with a hole in the center while the outer circumference was the size of the hole the air goes in it goes about a 1/4 inch into the intake. This is my trouble. I will look for a pic online since the egr I am talking about is in a box since i am moving soon.
K so the first pic (on the left) is of the part auto zone says goes to my car. Second is of the egr that my car had when I bought it. Just for questions sake I did put the other used egr valve from the parts car (like pic one) on to my car instead of the one in pic two. It made no difference so I didn't change them back out.

He didn't remember what engine it was originally for, they just went through the various parts at an auto parts store until he found one to fit, but it might be an option.

Iremember reading something in here about an exhaust leak somewhere in these four pages, but I can't find the question now. Could you refresh us? I think everyone has been so focussed on finding a solution to the egr problem that the exhaust leak was completely overlooked.

Ok STRIKER911, this is the TPI section of the board, not TBI. But I guess I will be nice and answer your questions.
1. TBI cars do not use the EGR exhaust temp sensor. Only TPI MAF cars do. The TBI EGR system consists of the solenoid, negative pressure EGR value, and MAP sensor operation, and ECM.
2. Can an exhaust manifold leak cause a problem in EGR function? Maybe, the EGR system is very sensitive to vaccum leaks. But I have not seen this situation so I can not answer for sure.
You can check your valve by looking at the part number. The valve you need should end in a "N" for negative pressure. See link. http://shbox.com/1/EGR_ID.jpg

I have a 89 formy 350. well it was a 350. I just unplugged my EGR temp sensor... never had any issues @ all. no ses no nothing??

Back when I was in school I was under the impression and taught that we have been coming out of a ice age 4 thousands of years, so yeah, wouldnt the earth b warmn up a bit? (didnt we just have one of the coldest year on record?)
The earth goes in cycles. I dont think that a 100 yrs of cars n hairspray would destroy our planet..
What are we going to do in thousnds of years when the earth starts to get colder??
im always happy to do R&D for the good of us 3rd genners and I know ill eventually be using my vacuum style EGR sensor bypass one day :P though this does not mean im not searching for a new thermistor for us, they are all around us in our furnaces and refridgerators and stoves, just got to find one that will fit and work in that temp range.

Hairspray has nothing to do with Global Warming. The "CFC's" in the gas found in aerosol cans (or propellant) causes the O-Zone layer to deteriourate which prevents harmful UV rays from penetrating the atmosphere. My EGR just floats around. When I rebult my engine, I couldnt find a bolt to bolt it down onto the head so I just left it as it is. Never caused any problems. No SES has came up. The only issue that I got is that my IROC just dies when I come to a stop every so often. But thats a different issue. I dont know if the EGR has to be grounded or not. When I get the money, Im going to buy carb cleaner and spray everywhere (gaskets) to see if I find a leak. Get this, the problem doesnt even cause a trouble code.
no the EGR does not need to be grounded, I actually found a perfect location for mounting it, I mounted mine to the firewall where, the MAP sensor on speed density camaros mounts!
ah. yea dropping vacuum can cause that, only other thing ive seen is a slow TCC solenoid causing the car to die, but the vacuum is more common, Im pulling 21 In. Hg. of vacuum, also i use a unlit propane gas torch to find my vacuum leaks, works wonders!
As for the tranny, same issue. Tried seafoam, Lucas tranny additive, and even a bottle of alcohol. No dice. I think the tach is also bad. It tops out at low RPM's. But I still drive it to work, slow but its all good because my wife finally has her car (Mercury Mystique) back. Hows your 3rd Gen?
Ive finally got about 90% of the kinks in my 305 TPI build ironed out, she pulls HARD, i have NEVER felt a 305 pull like that. im EXTREMELY happy with it, just hang in there, you'll get her done too! i'd think that you may want to try another tranny, it MIGHT fix your stalling issue too, also the TCC is inside the pan next to the valve body if i remember correctly.
90%, that's good Brandon. Its a good thing that your an x-mechanic for GM. Yeah. I was deciding whether I should take the tranny to Mexico and have a Master rebuild for $150, or just get a $800 reman. from http://sitekreator.com/Trans-Plant/main_page.html . But I decided. Im going to get a $800 tranny with a 2 year warranty. My IROC will be barking tires in about 3 months. As for now, I'll do while in 1st gear to scare the little rice burners at stop lights. I had this same problem, and it turned out to be the IAC valve!!! All I did was take out the IAC, clean it up real good, cleaned out the mounting location, and presto, haven't had that problem since!! It never threw a code either, it would just die out once in a while, when I came to a stop!!

I was wondering if you could take a look at the cooling forum, and look at the thread that I started: "Tricking the ECM to see a higher temp?" That way I don't hijack this thread anymore than I have to!!!

87IROC-DAN61;4382888. My IAC is brand spanking new. I had replaced mine because my IROC wouldnt start at all. As a matter of fact, The other 3rd gen member that your asking for help (Chevy8588), helped me with my IAC adjustment. If youve got a problem, He is the guy to turn to.

Gotcha on the IAC, not doubting Chevy8588, but you did do the minimum idle speed adjustment, did you, following the correct procedure? I haven't searched all your posts about your problem, but even if you changed the IAC, without doing the mimimum idle speed adjustment, you'd still have the same problem, only now it would be with a new IAC. As our cars age, normal wear and tear takes it's toll, and the end of the screw for the minimum idle speed adjustment can wear due to contact. Sometimes the wear is minimal, but does affect it. A vacuum leak around the throttle plate shaft might even be your problem, a bit of a stab in the dark, nonetheless doesn't hurt checking!!!
Yup. I went the whole mile. I just rebuilt my engine and I made sure of everything. I actually passed my budget on my project. I followed every step that I can find on the net (http://74.125.155.132/search?q=cache...&ct=clnk&gl=us and even here on thirdgen.org). And Chevy8588 also talked me through the process over the phone. Im just going to go the carb cleaner route and Ill get back with the results soon. Also to add, allthe intake gaskets are brand spankin new but still, Ill double check with the spray. Thanks for the advice though 87IROC-DAN61 .
be careful with carb cleaner, if your dizzy accidentally arcs it WILL start a terrible blaze:P propane or map gas is MUCH safer and a bit more precise if you u can use that

This thread is being hijacked. To close this non-related topic, all that Ill say is sea levels are rising due to carbon dioxide deposits into the atmosphere thus causing warmer air being absorbed into the air. Earth has its range of temperature that never drops below -100 and never passes 150 degrees on a natural givin day. Early 1900 pictures from glaciers in the artic show ice in between mountain ranges, now at the very same spot, there are deep empty valleys that were once filled with ice. Pictures show proof. Explaining and voicing theories without showing hard proof such as slide shows or actual time line pictures is just that. Time will tell if global warming is true. One thing is for sure, Tom Brokaw doesnt get paid to fool the public or give false information. That would ruin his reputation. For Tom to narrate a topic such as global warming, we all know for a fact that he approved of the scientific studies and info. so that he wont look like a fool when the cameras are recording. I strongly believe that global warming is occuring, its just hard to verify because time is the way to prove and unfortunately, time is slow. Way too slow for our generation (life span). I only "insinuated" you maybe a hypocrite, I did not assume you were any type of person like you perceive me to be. Obviously you do not take criticism well. I do not hide behind avatars and names online, if I have a comment I say it. People can have face to face conversations (and online conversations), and disagree, and still be civil. If you want to always put someone in check because they disagree with you, well then, that is something you will have to deal with. It sounds like you need to improve your communications skills.

Back to topic....lol! Today I went to a buddy of mine who's a manager of a AC Delco part store, and he COULDN'T find any EGR Temp Sensor/Switch here in Canada. Keep in mind he is NOT linked up to any dealers here. So if for some reason a dealer has one on there shelfs, he would be unable to know about it!
......99% sure part not in Canada either...........BS!!!!!!
like i said, it's a thermistor, if anyone has a bad one they would NOT mind sending me i will take it to a few of my local suppliers and we'll see if i can develop a new source of these damn things!

I asked them where they were going to get it from, and they told me Bluestreak!!! These are the same guys as Standard, BWD, etc, and they don't even list it on their sites!!!
If you need one, go to Autopartauctions.com they are located in Sugarland Texas, last time I looked, they had 5 left, at $50.00 each, and one at $85.00!!! If you buy from them, it's going to be via ebay, no orders via the phone due to they are not allowed to take your Visa/Mastercard info. I have three on the way, they are somewhere between New Jersey, and Chilliwack, hoping to get them soon!!!

I served 4 years and 7 months in The US ARMY and even took a tour during Operation Iraqi Freedom as a MOS "31C10 or "Single Channel Radio Operator." Which is Military Occupational Specialty Communication Specialist. So dont school me on communications.

Thank You for the heads up, but i already placed an order last night on Ebay through Autopartauctions.com. I only got one cause my org. still works......I just wanted an extra "Just in case".....(74.00 CDN).

Today I had the worst of luck. I was re-routing and organizing all my wires in the engine bay so that I can buy some new wire loom and SNAP!!!!! I snapped off the dang wire from the threaded needle that screws into the EGR. Got it fixed though. I soldered the heck out of it and it worked. Looks like junk but it worked. Ill post a picture tommorrow.
Your so lucky Chevy8588. All the junk yards here were I live (California) have a guide. I cant pocket things without a guide following me around. By the way, what other vehicles have the temp sensor (whether or not it has a different pigtail connection) so that I can look at different cars in Mexico (I live about 10 minutes North of the border). Hopefully I can stray away from the guides there too.
