Q-jet to TPI conversion.

I know there are a lot of threads out there about this topic. But I can't seem to find a clear answer.

I have a 1985 Firebird, 350 with a Q-jet carb, and shorty headers. all my smog stuff and egr is gone. I am really interested in converting to TPI.
I have a friend who has the wiring harness and pcm, and the intake, injectors...etc. just need to pull it all off the engine. There may be a few missing sensors and such.

What I need to know, is what kind of modifications are need to make the TPI setup work in my 1985 Carb'd Bird? Reasoning behind the conversion, tired of weird issues with carb adjustments and idling issues. Who has done this swap with good/bad results?!?!

please clear answers and non-bias answers only!! Haha I see a lot of bickering between carburetor fans and injection fans, really not trying to start one of those threads.

I converted an '85 carb with an auto to a tpi stick. It is not a job for amateurs. You will need to replace the underhood wiring harness with a modified harness from a tpi car. Replace the gas tank with one from a tpi. Run the return lines. You need a new hood to accept the air filter. Replace the computer and if you modify the 350 at all possibly run the car on a dyno and burn a new chip.

It would be easier to sell your car and buy what you want.

I converted my Elky to TPI a few years ago. Total cost, including the TPI parts, was close to $2K by the time it was done ( I replaced most of the sensors, injectors, etc, so I wouldn't have any issues making it work). Fuel delivery ( pump, tank, lines, sender, etc) was costly. Needed to get programming equipment and learn to program the ECM ( multiple chip burns to get it right). Wiring is not for the faint of heart. You need to be comfortable tearing into wiring harnesses ( and reading wiring diagrams).

It does run good, but if I had it to do over, I would seriously consider getting a good rebuilt Q-jet. The learning you will need to make the Q-jet sing is nothing compared to what is involved in making the TPI work.

I have a bunch of files located on my website, including a "straw man" build plan, as well as a list of all the parts I used. It would be a god starting point for your search for knowledge.
