Has anybody out there installed the $99 SLP posi unit in their car and swapped to 28 spline axles (82-87 of course)? Did it require any verifying of backlash or anything of the kind?

I measured before and after the swap..... had about .009 on the
stock set up and .005 after swapping in the Zexel posi, which is
great. Swapped the old gears (3:73) to the ZT posi and did not
change anything.

I've never swapped one of those particular ones; but I've changed an awful lot of carriers in general.
They almost always swap without re-setting them up. The thing that has the tolerance, that you have to shim to compensate for, is the housing. As long as the shims stay with the housing they belong with, the hard parts nearly always interchange with no issues.
