the rear end solution
Ok now in my car now i have an 87 iroc 10 bolt with drums. About a year ago i bought a 9 bolt with discs out of a wrecked 88. Now I have realized that 9 bolt rears are hard to get parts for. My question is, is it worth to rebuild the 9 bolt or do i rebuild the 10 bolt. My other quesion is does anyone know if the disc brake system from the 9 bolt can be switched over to the 10 bolt in the case that it is not worth the rebuild of the 9 bolt.

the rear is in decent shape the calipers are a little on the rough side otherwise all is good but i want to change out the very low 2.77 for 4.10 and the 10 bolt i have has the same problem it has 2.73 and i want 4.10. im pushing 500 give or take. The car was a track car now i just want a street car again, i sold my currie 9" with C clip eliminators to pay my tuition. In order to keep the car on wheels in the mean time i bought the 10 bolt.

If you're still putting out around 500 H.P., you'll probably be living on borrowed time with either rear end, although the nine bolt is a bit stronger than the ten bolt. However, you're right about the availability of parts for the nine bolt, they are hard and expensive to get. You can swap the disc parts onto the ten bolt. You have to cut off the top part of the axle flange where the big hole for the wheel cylinder brake line goes, and you have to drill the upper holes for mounting the backing plate. The other modification you have to perform is to router out the holes on the backing plate as the ten bolt's hole spacing is slightly different on the axle flange. It would be cheaper and easier to get the 4.10 gears for the ten bolt instead of the nine bolt. I would highly recommend using a solid pinion spacer in lieu of the crush sleeve and also using the t/a performance aluminum rear girdle on the ten bolt to help it stand up to your power output.
