this posi unit should work right?
thanks to ede and likeenz24 i've been figurin this stuff out. I found this guy sellin a "factory GM 26 spline 3 seris GOV-LOC posi unit to fit all popular 7.5 26 spline "c" clip style rear ends". It also says it fits 82-88 firebirds and accepts factory gear ratios from 3.23 to 4.11.
Now to my knowledge my firebird is an 1988 26-spline 7.5" factory open 3.42 diff and i wanted to check with you guys before goin through w/ the purchase. thanks,

It acts like an open diff, i.e. no clutching action whatsoever, until the difference between the RPMs of the 2 axles exceeds about 100 RPM. At that point it attempts to lock up. Which means, no posi action whatsoever from a stop.
Obviously, quite good for a 4WD type situation, in mud or something, where there's no traction; but a VERY VERY BAD design for pavement. It WILL turn itself to shrapnel if used in a high-power application on asphalt or concrete. Even a 6-cyl like the ones in S trucks will grenade them easily.
DO NOT buy it thinking it's going to give you better traction off the line.
