The Detroit Locker vs Auburn Pro Thread

....Street / Strip Application....

^Above is defined as the daily driver who races on neerby highways and takes the occasional trip to the track.

So what will it be? The noise of the detroit or the less true stealthness of the auburn...

Differential Choices

Auburn Gear High Performance Series:

The highly efficient torque transfer capability of the Auburn Gear limited-slip differential is achieved through the use of cone clutches coupled to beveled side gears. As torque is transmitted through the differential side gears to the axle shafts, the side gear separating forces and spring pre-load firmly seat the cones into the differential case. The cone design, along with the applied force, determines the torque transfer capability of the differential. When torque levels decrease, as in a cornering maneuver, the gear separating forces also decrease, allowing the axle shafts to rotate independently.

Detroit Locker:

The legendary Detroit Locker began the revolution in performance differentials and still leads the industry today. The Detroit Locker is the most durable and dependable locking differential available.

The Detroit Locker maximizes traction by delivering 100% of the torque to both drive wheels. It is engineered to keep both wheels in a constant drive mode, and has the ability to automatically allow wheel speed differentiation when required.

depends entirely on the use ( the words street/strip are not sufficent) and on the powertrain.

if you're pushing less then 450hp to the ground, theres no reason to have a detroit locker instead of a limited slip.

if you're pushing into the 800range, id just jump to the locker.

strangely enough, i just went thru this... but my choice was easy.. im in the latter group, so my only choices were a locker or a spool... lol.

I always like to plan ahead. What if in a year from now I yank out the motor and rebuild it again? You never know... Im probably in the 400 range right now. I created this post to observe others opinions and not necessarily to aquire technical support.

MrDude_1, did you jump to the locker or spool. You didn't specify. How loud is the locker and what kinds of noises does it let out?

well, unless you think you'll suddenly be building a forced induction motor, or that you'll be building a $15,000+ motor (thats not a mistype), i wouldnt plan on it.

besides, i said 450 to the rear wheels... if you're "in the 400 range" right now, then you're not making 450RWHP anytime soon.

but, like you said, you never know..... and therefore, you can never plan ahead with 100% accuracy.. but you can be realistic.

for my opinion, and any educated one, you'll have to be more specific.

locker. the car still sees alot of street duty.
i dont have it installed yet, but its most likely identical to every other locker ive driven.

its loud in parking lots, it takes some getting used to when crusing, and you have to adjust your driving style coming out of corners... but its fun sometimes.

if i could, id run a conventional limited slip, but id wear it out in less then a season with the turbo.. a locker is one of thoes mods that really takes the street part out of the car... not to say that you cant drive it... not to say its not fun at first, and at times, but it does make the car less enjoyable when you're not playing around.

Although I would love an electric or air actuated carrier, costs are playing a major role in my decision.

The other reason a started this thread was to get opinions. I'm in a 4yr auto program here at college (Suny Morrisville). When I ran this question to my transmissions and drivetrain instructor, he seemed to be biased towards the locker. Though when I tried to explain what the auburn pro unit was to him, he hasn't heard about it.

Agian, Thankyou for your input.

I hate to throw another choice into the mix to confuse you further, but if you're going to use a clutch style limited slip, I'd go with an eaton unit over the auburn. The eaton has a stronger case than the auburn, and it's fully rebuildable too. Once you fry an auburn unit, you're done. An eaton usually costs about 50-100 dollars more than the auburn, but if you're going to be hard on it, I think the extra money is well worth it considering it's rebuildable. There's a couple of shops on ebay selling brand new eaton units for prices I haven't seen matched anywhere else, so you might want to check there. Summit and Jegs want $500 and up for them, the ebay guys are selling them for less than $400. I saw one listed a few weeks ago for like $369.
