As the post says it takes a while for it to go into any gear. Drive or reverse.
History is a 305 tbi to a 383 carb. Tranny is the stock 700r4. it was great prior to the swap, nothing has been changed. would the tv cable, torque converter, be the problem? What would cause the tranny to have a prolongation og actually getting into gear and then be really sluggish when in gear. the engine gets up to 3 or 4k on tach but car is barely wanting to move.

Very well could be something basic as the need for a transmission flush. Pick up some Trans Tune, follow the directions for using it. IIRC drive around 10 to 15 miles or let it idle in the driveway in D with the brake on. Drop the pan change the filter, fill the transmission up, disconnect the transmission cooler on the radiator so it can pump that extra quart or so of fluid out of the cooler and keep adding fluid. Backyard way to do a transmission flush. Helps out the cold weather moving and slow response from R to D or any gear for that matter.

Or I could just be completely off and TraviZ is right, just my 2cents.

Well I am kind of speechless at the moment. The problem has resolved itself. I wasn't sure at first so i let it sit for a while and came back to it, everything is fine again. First time I have actually driven the 383. man, besides for some fine tuning needing to be done, SHI.......she is fast!!!

I bet with a little more info the answer would have been more obvious, you probably put the torque converter on the tranny without fluid and all the slipping and getting in gears were lagging because there was no fluid in the torque converter yet.

No, the car has been ran for about an hour all and all over the period of 2 weeks prior to me trying to drive it so that doesn't make much sense. but then again, when i left it alone, and just came back to it, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense either so......who knows, its fine now. Just other problems take its place lol.

Be 100% sure the TV cable is set properly before you drive it and that it is truely full of fluid.
- unless you know for sure the current fluid & filter are fresh, change it.
