700R4 Identification Help
Hello. I was wanting to know if anyone on here could narrow down my transmission. I have an 1986 TransAm, but it has been through a few rebuilds of the orig tranny, had another one swapped in at one time and the most recent one is yet from another car. Looking through my trans books, I can only get part of it identified. On the passenger side rear, just above the pan lip, there is a flat boss area. The numbers are sequential and have no dashes or breaks. The number is 1KWM137B. My sources say this code type is for 1989 and later models. The first # (1) indicates a 1991, the first two letters indicate ModelType (KW) but I have no reference for it, the next letter (M) indicates a 700R4 which is a no-brainer, the last 3 numbers (137) indicate day in the year of the build and the last letter (B) indicates it was built during the 1st shift. There could be another number before the day (137) but mine doesnt have it. I couldnt find the VIN anywhere it said...in fact I couldnt see the VIN anywhere I could see with a mirror and light. Hopefully the numbers above will be enough. I would just like confirmation of what I seem to have found out so far, and if someone knows what the KW represents (Ive heard its wiring related) and the info on it. If its wiring, where can I get that diagram? I have a 1985 GM orig service manual which has a few of the TCC wiring for up to that year. THX in advance!

Dang! I was hoping to find out more =( . It seems 2B a 1991 but I dont have a reference guide to the ModelType. Which is KW.....anyone got a lead on this. Id like to know if it was a F-body trans or something else with a swapped in tailshaft.

Re: 700R4 Identification Help
Thx Bill. I have a 1985 GM F-body (firebird/ta) factory manual and a Haynes Techbook on GM Trannys. The Haynes is where I decoded most of the info as far as the type of # being for the 89-later, the tear build and date codes. It has (see chart) for the model type but no chart that would correspond to what the (KW) indicates. I appreciate it. Im pulling the pan off today and servo cover. Im trying to conclude/confirm I have a bad 2-4 band, but also want to inspect a few other things. I just can no longer trust the tranny shops here anymore.
