700r4 TCC Lockup Help!

I just recently purchased a 700r4 and installed it into my 82 camaro which origianlly had a 4 speed, how can I get the converter to lock up? I know they make kits and everything but i was hoping that I could just plug it into the tranny and have something work (if that makes sense). I saw in the Tech articles something about a torque converter lock up switch, is that what I need? I could get by manually engaging and disengaging the lockup while i'm on the highway and in town, I assume running without the lockup would be bad for the transmission am I correct? Please lend me some help if ya would.
