700R4 blues :( :(

my tranny started whining a while back. it did this in gear, drive and reverse. it was more noticeable while stopped or accelerating at low rpms. drove to work the other day, same ol thing, but when i left that afternoon, it stopped. it still shifts good, and doesn't slip but no O.D. i changed the fluid and filter about a month ago when it started acting up. got more fluid and another filter today, but havn't installed it yet. any ideas guys? thanx

Same as what happened with my buddy's. His stoppeed shifting normal though. Pretty much from what I hear from every trans shop is that just about any shifting problem with a 700R4 you'd be best off to do a complete rebuild. They'll do "overhauls" or whatever, but they won't guarantee it will fix anything. Plan on about 1,000$

Well, the trannys out and the back up trannys going back in tomorrow along with the stock converter. Just wondering how hard it is to build one yourself? I've done several motors myself. Can I get a manual somewhere to guide me through it? I'd like to learn how to do this. And I'm really going to miss the shiftkit and stall But when I get the tranny fixed I'm going to put a new stall back in, but with a lockup this time

later

$1,000??? Somebody's gettin' ripped off! I can get a rebuilt 700R4 here with a 1 year warranty for about $700...and that's with a corvette servo!! You can also get a TH350 with an adapter block that allows the 700R4 tail housing to bolt to the TH350 tranny....therefore no cross member mods are needed and you can reuse the same driveshaft! That's what I have in my car right now and it only cost me about $375 for that....with a 1 year warranty!!

------------------
1986 Trans AM
305 TPI
200,000+ miles (speedo/odometer non-funtional! Odometer reads 142,000)
4 Wheel Discs
9 bolt Borg Warner Rear (2.73's....oh joy) :P
Completely Stock
Soon to upgrade to a 350 converted from TPI to Carb, Edelbrock 750CFM Carb, Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake, Headman Shorty Headers, Some sort of ported heads (undecided), XE268 Cam, Moroso HEI ignition kit with external MSD Blaster II Coil and an MSD 6-AL Box!!
Current project: Keeping my 305 running until I get my income tax returns!

hey 86, that TH350 sure is strong, but i drive alot of highway miles, about 60 miles round trip to work and back. so i just can't do without my O.D.

Ya know, I was thinkin' the same thing as you about the gas mileage before I did the swap but I only lost about 2MPG after the swap!! Not too bad....and you end up getting used to it!! By all means tho, if you have the money then have the 700R4 rebuilt!! I'm putting a 700R4 back in my car sometime next month!! The TH350 is a strong tranny but when you're stupid like me and you blow the front seal and don't realize it you burn up second gear....like I did!!
