Factory shifter help (auto)

I tried doing a search, but I dont even know where to start. This is a 305 auto car.

I drove the car this weekend, and it ran like hell. I parked it for a day or two, and went to run to the store last night. Started fine, sounded okay, but when I pulled the shifter into reverse, it went all the way back to 1st, like there was nothing there. The car didnt move, and the shifter got stuck in 2nd. I shut it off, and reached under the car, and pushed the linkage full forward by hand, not sure if thats normal. Still couldnt get the stick to go into park. The shifter has never went into 1st without having to force it and hold it.

I took the center console out (a serious PITA by the way), and everything looks okay, but I dont really know what Im looking at. There is a smaller cable on the driver side of the mechanism that appears to be stuck. I disconnected it, and the lever went back into park. I have no idea where this cable even goes. It appears to be stuck on the other end. The stick works like it should now, without this other cable hooked up. Ive jacked the car up, and crawled under it, but cant really see anything. And I looked at the throttle linkage, and it seems to be okay too.

Where does this thing go? And what could have broke? Ill post a picture if i need too.

Re: Factory shifter help (auto)

You'll need to get more light under there with you. And don't forget to use jackstands. The common problem is where the shift cable jacket attaches to the bracket, at the rear of the pan, on the driver's side. You're already halfway to replacing the entire cable assembly, it's $21 from AutoZone, they call it a range selector. Part number CA-1110. This is an entry-level job on these cars, you've already done the hardest part. The best way to get it right is put the key in the car, don't start it, then have an assistant operate the shifter while you adjust the linkage.

Re: Factory shifter help (auto)

There are two cables that hook up to the shifter. One goes to the tranny and the other goes to the ignition on the steering columb. Figure out which cable is binding up and fix the problem or replace the cable.

The cable that goes to the ignition is a safety feature to prevent you from locking the ignition unless the car is in park. You could leave it disconnected and the car should still work fine but it should be fixed. The cable goes from the shifter under the carpet and over to the steering columb. I think there is a braket that hold it to the floor that will need removed if changing the cable.

Re: Factory shifter help (auto)

Thanks guys. Problem solved.

It was the shifter cable. I wasnt sure which one it was, because the cable wouldnt come all the way out, from the top yesterday. Today I yanked it, and out it came. It looked like it almost twisted in half, because the end was rolled over. Anyway, I got it. 1 hour, and $32 isnt bad. Thanks.

Now I just have to fix the miss.....
