T-handle button

Hello. I have and 83 TA with the T-handle shifter and I noticed that I do not have to push the button on the side to change gears anymore. I took out the clip that holds the T on and found that the plasic "stick" inside the lever had broken and seems to have fallen downward permanently engaging the mechanism. Although it's easy to drive this way, it's not really safe and any help you can lend to exactly how the mechanism was designed and how I might go about repairing it. Maybe a schematic or two, Whatever.

Thanks in advance!!!!

Yes. So how does the inner workings on the lever to the trans work? The piece inside seems to have broken and gotten stuck allowing the shifter to be moved from p,r,d,2,1 anytime.

The problem does not lie within the T-handle. It's in the shift lever.
