700r4 or th400

Hey guys i searched for a thread like this but didnt see one. I have a 82 pace car that i am rebuilding.. i have an 89 rear disk rear end with 3.23 gears that i just put in.(9" in the future) it is getting a 383 small block aprox 400hp.. i do have a 505 big block in the works for later down the road. exp 600hp with a 150 shot of NOS.

this car will be a street car with a trip to the strip maybe a couple times a month.. it will not be a daily driver.. i am making sub frame connectors and will be welding in a 8 point cage soon.. the car is stripped down right now..

Question is which tranny is best for this application? I have one of each, i plan on having it rebuilt by a pro.. just wondering if there is any real advantage to the 700r4 other than the 4th gear of course.

i am an old school kind of guy and have always had a 350 or 400 in the cars.. i have no exp with the 700 r4.

thanks for any input.

Well do you want it to break or do you want to waste gas spinning a needlessly heavy drivetrain and drive in the slow lane on the interstate?

I'd say since this isnt a dd run a th350 or th400, you have no real need for the OD of the 700r. The th350 can be built to hande an amazing amount of power, and will rob you of less power. Plus it will be an easier swap. It will easily handle that 383

Re: 700r4 or th400

The 700 will need alot of work and $$$ to make it standup to a 383 and especially a big block, on the otherhand OD is nice. As far as the 400 goes, I wouldn't run one w/ a small block it's just not necessary, a big block it would be the best choice. I also agree you can build a TH350 cheaper than either and it'll swap in alot easier. 350 is a great trans especially for the SBC application....

Re: 700r4 or th400

thanks guys for the input.. anyone else want to pipe in?
does anyone know if the 350 turbo and 400 turbo have the same mounting location as far as the tranny cross member?
if they are different i am leaning to the 400 as i know that will be the one i will use for the big block and i dont want to have to buy another crossmember and make it work with the torque arm again later.. if the same cross member will work for both then i am thinking 350
thanks
