1991 GTA got a Rear Axle Problem, Suggestions?
This is not the first third gen that I have had a similar problem with.
This axle in Question is a 1991 10 bolt limited slip w/disc brake set up with 165,000 miles on it..
Not a Borg Warner Axle (thankfully- IMO)
The Symptoms:
Some times - not all the time - it seems like it hangs up then releases in reverse only - makes a clunking noise.
IT doesn't matter if i am going straight or while turning - just in reverse only
U-Joints are good and it does not make this noise while going forward.
The rear brakes have just been replaced with new rotors.
It seems to happen more after the car has been driven and at its destination.
This has never happened when first started and backed out of its parking spot.
The problem:
So here is where I trouble guess......
I am thinking maybe something to do with the clutches for the limited slip?
Maybe I could be wrong?
With 165K on it - they could be worn out.
I do not know if the 90W has ever been changed?
Can the additive lose it's abilities over the years?
If the fluid was changed and the additive for the limited slip was never added......
Could the affect be what the symptoms are?
ANY CONSTRUCTIVE ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED

Your car will have the Auburn differential in it, which had cones instead of clutch plates. These are very bad about popping and jerking. It will get worse when the oil gets hot. Every one that I have dealt with requires 2 bottles of GM oil additive to make them quit. Yes, the oil will break down with use, so I recommend changing the oil and putting in the additive. Also keep the air pressure equal in the rear tires and be sure that they have the same amount of tread wear. The tires must be exactly the same size.

First off - I HATE 90w oil !! you can wash it off - yet the smell remains
But if that is what had to be done - I tried what was suggested.
I drained out about 2 quarts of this black water like liquid.
The cover had the paper gasket, yet no silicone.
Chances are the cover had never been removed.
Put just over 2 quarts of the new fluid with the 2 additives mixed.
The problem has not reoccurred yet !!
It never did it consistantly, so I am trying to be positive.
