T56 conversion: where does the boot go?

I recently finished a T56 conversion and got around to buying an used boot on ebay. Question is how does this thing go on? I thought I'd be straightforward but I guess it's not.

The base of the boot isn't totally flat. Is there a metal ring that goes with it? Does the boot go in from underneath? how close is the hole in the boot to the shifter at neutral position? I've been looking at installs for a picture but can't find one. Would I be better off with one of those cheap hurst one-size-fits-all boots?

I live in Orlando, FL if anyone has a manual w/ the console out that would be willing to show me. Thanks!
