What problems can i encounter with a 89 Firebird
Hi there my fellow 3rd gen lovers. I live in the Netherlands and thirdgen cars are somewhat of a luxory. However i've been offerd a 1989 Pontiac Firebird V6 2.8L with 15.000 miles on the gauge.
So far it really looks like it did 15.000 miles, the engine looks like new and at the bottom the paintcoating is still like new aswell.
So now here comes the big Question: everything looks great and considering it isn't cheap to drive a car like this daily in the Neterlands, i really love it and want to use it every day (about 35 miles a day).
Does anyone know what kind of problems i may encounter, are there certain weaknesses i should know off, or considering it only did 15.000 miles, should not give me any problems at all for the upcomming year?
I hope someone can help me with this question, because it's the only thing that can stop me from buying my dream car.
Thanks in Advance,
A European Pontiac Lover

Welcome!
As for me I have 2 thirdgens, my first was an 87 2.8L firebird. I loved it! Not too many problems with it and it is still running with the original motor at a little over 180,000 miles on it. I had to replace the alternator once and I had a exhaust manifold leak too. I also had the tranny rebuilt once too. I is a V6 so it's not fast but I still love driving it and if I want to go fast I have my 89 5.7L IROC
.
I'd say go for it if your not looking for speed but just some style
Good Luck!

Wow, that is very low milage!
TomP on the V6 board has over 200,000 miles on the engine, so don't worry about the block itself for a long time, as long as you change the oil regularly.
The three things that I would be worried about:
1) Alternator. Always going bad, and I'm guessing there aren't many Firebirds in the junkyards where you are
Replace it with a good quality one if it ever breaks.
2) Starter. I've seen lots of people having problems with these.
3) Not sure if you have a manual or automatic, but if you have an auto, the transmission mounts are *always* breaking. I went through 2 before I ordered the good ones from Energy Suspension. Send me an email if you want the part number.
These cars are a blast to drive, have fun!
