Sandpaper works real well.Sorry, not trying to be funny, but that's what I used before polishing my 92 16" Wheels.

Go to Wal-mart and buy this stuff called "Airplane Remover". It will be in the automotive section around the touch up paint and sandpaper. Remove the wheels. Apply it with a paint brush, wait about 5-10 min for it to bubble up, then pressure wash it off or scrape it off with a plastic putty knife. The metal underneath will look nice and bright, but with a little Mother's polish they will look even better. It took me about 4 hours to do all 4 wheels. Make sure and where latex gloves.

I second the product called "Aircraft Surface Stripper", available at most any parts stores and of course Wally World.
You will be so happy with the results you may just leave it like that. I did mine without tires on, I have no clue how it would effect rubber but it can't be good for it. The stuff burns skin in seconds but it's safe on aluminum.

Well I got some paint stripper from home depot. I went to pep boys but they didn’t have anything there. So I was at the car wash last night brushing this paint stripper on my rims. It took allot of that mess to get all the plastic and silver paint off but it came off. Shines like a mirror now. I'll I need now is some polish and anything to protect the bare aluminum. I did take some before and after shoots that I'll be posting when the jobs done but YEAH it worked great.

I used the Aircraft stripper on my rims last winter. It did a good job removing the clear coat, but did not do very well on the paint on the inside of the spokes. I was trying to do the polish thing but it was a waste of time. I ended up painting them and clear coating them again. They look OK except up close you can see the jagged edge of the paint on the spokes. This winter I hope to have time to sandblast them, powder coat them and clear coat them again. I am helping my friend make a powder coat oven out of a stripped out fridge. We made a sandblaster out of a 55 gallon drum. It's fun to be able to do this stuff without paying someone else.
