Thats mine. I got some rubber elbows some 3.5 inch alum intake tubing from airintakehoses.com and built my own. The air filter is under the driver's side fender and pulls air from the ground. I still need to get some metal and block off the rest of the fender though, right now water can spray off the tire and soak the air filter.

Hey, I have a carbed 385. Do you guys think that this kinda intake is better than an old school round open element filter? I have a cowl hood.

With a cowl hood, no it's no better. You have an area of low pressure at the back of the cowl and the carb will draw air from there; it's basically already a cold air. If you want to do something with your setup make a box to keep it from drawing air from anywhere but the cowl area.

Yeah, I was thinkin' about that. I just don't want it to look stupid when I pop my hood. Maybe I can fabricate something out of aluminum plate and foam.

stevenk..thts a good setup but you had to move your bettery right? and when your air filter sits so low, do you have problems with water getting to your air filter?

dave-92gta: read the post more clearly. He said he has to make a water guard allready. And as for the bettery, it is on the other side. That is where the charcoal canister goes. It can easily be moved.

it takes A LOT to actually get water up through the intake piping.

- as for the original post, are we talking air intake ducting(as everyone has responded to) or the actual intake(as in manifold)?

for the ducting, yes, several people on this board have built some very nice, high quality set-ups.

for the intake manifold, its VERY complicated. I'm working on one for myself right now, all tig'd aluminum. You have to get the sealing surfaces absolutely perfect, and get the distributor at the proper location, height, and angle.

As far as the battery; Camaro's have the battery on the passenger side as do TBI Firebirds. Only TPI and V6 Firebirds have the battery on the drivers side. So, he wouldn't have had to move the battery.

StevenK, that is a nice looking swap you've done. I would love to have your car.

i was thinking of doing on the right side where my air filter goes, it would be easy for me, i would just have to drill a 3.5 inch hole and continue what i already have. i think you would be able to get more cold air from down there.

nice setup!

New Air intake Filter setup

I have a 92 Camaro RS 305. I know my air intake is crap. what do yall suggest. My car is completely stock, but im looking for some better gas milage and a little better performance. I was looking at a simple over head round open filter and just sit it on there. But i would lie to know what ya ll think i should do.

ya get an open element. do a search on it and you'll find alot, just be sure to make sure you dont crush any wires or have the cleaner come in contact with your coil.

i'm assuming by the way this thing is going that your not talking about intakes, your talking about custom induction for your intake.

for anyone who is looking to do their own intakes i know kinsler here in michigan is just one of many places that will do such a thing for some really trick efi work. it's costly though at $3,000+

Ever drive around town in the summer and then open the hood up? An open element filter would be breathing in all that horrendous heat.....

n oone realy makes a nice cold air setup for carbs huh? Seems kinda strange when all you need is the hat, some pipes and a cone filter. If I can find a cheap hat, I might make one.... At the same time, I do have my cowl hood, so maybe I can use some foam and double sided tape or something to force the motor to use air from the cowl. If I had the ability to cut sheetmetal easily, it would be so easy to design a nice cold air cowl set-up. In my eyes, every cowl hood should be sold be offered with one for a few extra bucks. Just a plate of AL, cut with your carbs opening, then bolt it down, and have some rubbery walls or foam kinda thing with it open tword the cowl. And a simple K&N in there. Seems to me like a "I'm bored", winter project. hehe.

plus most people with carbs go to a cowl hood, so there is not a big market for intakes for carbs. if you think about it cowl hoods would get better preformance than cold air intake. you can get air from all around. anywho not a big carb guy but thats what i was thinking.
