New SD Vortec Setup - Port/Polish first? any tips/articles?
I have my Scoggin-Dickey upgraded Vortec heads and I am considering porting and/or polishing the intake / exhaust ports but I don't want to mess them up.
There was an article describing the gains by polishing before installing this exact setup on a TPI but I can't find it now.
The extent of my experience is limited to gasket matching.
Any tips before I start would be appreciated.
thanks,
-Dan

Unless you are running a big cam and need really big flow at high lift, you should just gasket match your intake/headers to your heads and go with it. Iron Vortec's have excellent low lift numbers, and by opening anything up, you'll compromise the low lift flow to gain at higher lifts. Unless your cam operates at higher lifts, this will result in an overall loss of power/drivablity/efficiency.
So I guess what I'm saying is that the answer to that question depends on your cam and intended RPM range. Honestly, you are more likely to make them worse unless you are a porting ace.

You REALLY need to review this thread, the best on he internet for stock GM Vortecs. Hosted by Dirt Reynolds, with invaluable info from Gary Penn who was involved with GMPP during the development of the GM Vortecs.
