While you're waiting, you might want to pick up an extra console top at a wrecker just in case. You'll have to saw the ashtray off for the Dual/Gate.

Very good constrution. It also uses the factory shift cable, the parking lock cable, the factory netural safty switch. so there is no cutting of wires you just remove the switch from your old shifter and mount it to the hurst shifter and plug it back in.

The factory shift cable?? Can you replace it with a new aftermarket one, or are you just limited to a new factory cable?

My Brother in-law and I installed one in his 87' Iroc last weekend. It took about 45 minutes and it looks great. We just went to Year one/next gen and they had it in stock for $229. Oh yea, it works as well as it looks.

Hey Irockin or anyone with experience, I have a couple of questions on the actual use of the dual gate 2. Is the performance side of it like a ratchet shifter? Like if you slam it from 1st to second, will it catch and not let you overshift it to third? And also if you're in third gear, and slam it back into second, will the tranny go to second or will it wait till you decrease speed to do that? Same thing opposite way, if i go from second to fourth for gas mileage, will it go into fourth, or wait till it naturally goes through third and then fourth? Thanks, your help is much appreciated.

I believe there's a stepped gate, so you have to move the shifter slightly to the side before moving it forward or back into the next gear.

Had mine about a year now... The 2nd Gate could be a little more decisive, apart from that I love it..

is it possible to fit a t-handle on that shifter, i like the look of a t-handle much better than the ball, other than that i love that shifter.

Hey noam, yep the 'ball' just unscrews, was thinking of getting something a little funkier on there myself, though the ball does ring back memories of the original Muscle Car

ah sweet zz, one more question, how does it shfit ie: where is the button for it? (is there a button you have to press for it???) i don't see one in the pics...i know the megashifter and hurst v-matic2 have the little pull thingie, which is pretty sweet imho, but if this thing is better than the v-matic 2 (i've heard nothing but horror from the megashifter so screw that) i'll probably get this one.

Hey Markolc
I,m Irockin's brother-in-law.. The dual-gate shifter is great. But you can overshift, Yes there are notches to catch gears, but overshift is still possible. I found that if you just bump it in gear it dosen't overshift, I've only had it for a couple of weeks and it gets easier to control my shifting the more i use it. If you slam it back to 2nd it will go back to 2nd right away, so be careful with that. Yes you can skip gears but your tranny will go through the complete shift sequenc anyway. Hope this helps you.

Hey noam,

The push button is totaly elimanated when you go to the dual-gate shifter. Once you pull the frame for you original shifter you'll see where that push button comes into play. I'ts not part of the tranny, just a part of the type shifter you're using..

So since there's no button or anything, I can accidentally shift into 1st or reverse at high speeds if I move my hand suddenly? Is there any lockout or anything to prevent that? Once I get into a position, I want it to stay there (unless I'm in the 2nd gate).

Ok, to answer a couple more questions, Noam there is no button, if you want to 'play' you only use the 2nd Gate... Ironically it does 2 things;

1) It eliminates accidentally hitting Reverse gear, and I found if you put pressure to the shifter (to the right) it will spring up a gear at a time... but it can be tricky not to overshift. Get it right though and try to remove the grin it puts on your face.

2) Psycologically you feel like you are in a race situation, its like lifting that little red flap over the missile switch on an F-16 type feeling.. Even now I only ever use the 2nd Gate when going to the strip or the occassional Traffic light Grand Prix But like a stash of dirty magazines, you know its there

I had a 79 Hurst/Olds and it was orginally equipped with the dual gate, and I can't wait to get one in my 87 IROC, now I have to find carbon fiber to make an overlay that matches the rest of the interior.

It is realy simple to operate. There are 2 sides to the shifter (as you can see in teh pic.'s). The side closest to you is for normal operation. you can go from park to 1st and from 1st to park. Now in a "race" situation you would put the shifter in neutral (I beleive.. it may be drive) and move the shifter handel to the right to put it into the second side. Now the second side works just like a 74 - 81 factory ratchet shifter. you can move it from drive to 1st with no problem and from 1st to drive with no problem the way you get it stop at each gear is by puching the handle to the right as you up shift. There is a little catch that sticks out of the shifter handle down inside there and it catches on these peices that stick out of the gate. So basicaly when you go from 1st to 2nd you push the handle up and to the right (at an angle) and it will stop and not go any farther, then let it spring back over and do the same thing again for 2nd to 3rd and so on. It may sound a little confusing at first but it is realy easy. If you want to see how it works before you lay the money down for one go find any late 70's Camaro or Firebird that has the factory shifter still it the moves from side to side (there are 2 different kinds one that "wiggles" will move about an inch from side to side and one that is "solid" will not move side to side at all) The one that moves side to side works the same way. We call them the "stealth shifters" they are great for factory appearing "sleeprs" hot rods...lol
