Re: Double Din Bezel by Double D Mods

Punish3R,

I have taken out my stereo mount/holder in my 87 TA and now have a question. I have attached a current pic of the plug that went into the old stereo(stk) that was removed. How do i convert this so it plugs into the Pioneer DD unit.

I am still trying to figure out if that bracket you have will work for me...

Thanks

Re: Double Din Bezel by Double D Mods

Mrrman - did u pull out a OEM stereo or a aftermarket stereo? You need an aftermarket wiring harness and you then need to connect it to the pioneer unit. The pioneer unit will have directions on how to do it. PM me if you want my cell number and I can walk you through it. EASY.

Re: Double Din Bezel by Double D Mods

You need a wiring harness. Run to Best Buy or and stereo store and grab one, pretty generic.

Re: Double Din Bezel by Double D Mods

A while back I purchased meta connector to hook up my single din Pioneer GPS unit to my car, never got around to it. So now I have the Pioneer DD unit and would ike to know if this is the connector that I need to hook up the Pioneer DD unit. Do I mate the meta connector wires to the Pioneer harness then on the opposite site mate the wires to the stk harness in the car?

Thanks

Stk harness

It seems like there are going to be alot of wires not used given that there may be only 8 wires on the stk harness. Is this correct?

Re: Double Din Bezel by Double D Mods

That should work. You need wire connectors. Some wires don't get used, I recommend you do the ebrake bypass otherwise you need to hook it to your ebrake, which looks like a pain in the b*tt. If you don't do either you won't be able to watch movies at all. The ebrake bypass is easy.

I used the harness from the 1Din head unit that the previous owner installed.

Do you have the stereo manual? Its in there and its easy. If you don't have it, download it.

Did you place your DD unit in a bezel before you mounted it? I am trying to see what would work to secure this to the stk stereo housing.

I put the 2DIN stereo in FIRST and the bezel SECOND. I had to do it this way because I kinda had to wiggle the head unit under the climate control and get the eBrake delete relay as far into the back as possible.

Stupid question but how would he mod a stock bezel to fit that head unit if the opening in the stock bezel is actually cut wider does he add on to it and then re-finish it?

Yours turned out good btw...

Re: Double Din Bezel by Double D Mods

FYI if you want a GM stereo in there, look for late 90s Regal-Century-LeSabre-Park Avenues and get CD and cassette in double DIN

You could also use the Oldsmobile version, found in 95-up Aurora-Cutlass Supreme and others, but it says OLDSMOBILE on the CD opening, the Buick has no marque decal anywhere.

I'm not done yet. You Firebird owners like your amber/red gauge backlighting, right? Go find a 99-05 or so Bonneville, Grand Am, Grand Prix, or Montana minivan. They had CD-cassette stereos as well. Dark pic to show the backlighting:

For those of you who can't find it, the Camaro Double DIN bezel is not in the Double DIN section of the site. It's under 82-92 Camaro instead. Here's a direct link.

The finished installed looks great!

I have a couple questions tho..
1 - How is the HU secured into the dash?
2 - Have you experienced any overheating with the HU?

Re: Double Din Bezel by Double D Mods

I would like to see one installed in a camaro as well before spending $100. I prefer to use a mounting bracket if it is included.....most of the time this will assist with vibration of your deck. for those of you buying NAV and DVD units, you dont have to buy a Ebrake relay.....I did my Alpine in my truck without it but have forgot. I am going to see him on Monday, so wil report back on how to bypass the safety feature without purchasing more stuff.

white_ghost - I think the guy at the shady auto stereo store down the street gave me the relay for like $5 and tossed in scrap wire and the connectors. It was super easy and cheap; works like a charm.

Re: Double Din Bezel by Double D Mods

[quote=PUNISH3R;5291477]Incase anyone is interested. I decided to do a DVD and NAV parking brake bypass. This way the parking break does not have to be engaged to operate Nav or DVD. This works with the Pioneer AVH-1400DVD.

***DO NOT VIEW DVDS OR ADJUST NAV WHILE DRIVING!***
This is strictly for passenger use.

If you're interested here are the steps:

1. Buy a relay. Most autoparts or car stereo stores have them, it cost me $5. The one I have is:

MAS
MAS50MV
30A/50A
14DC

2. Plug wires into the numbers on the relay as follows:

30 - Light Green Wire (Parking Brake)
85 - Light Blue and White Wire (Remote)
35 - Black Wire (Ground)
87 - Black Wire (Ground)
87a - In the center is left unwired
Loop 35 and 87 to black ground wire

I think you meant "35 - Black Wire (Ground)" to be "86" or does your relay really say 35?

I run this HU in my Tacoma and I ran a SPDT switch to ground for the DVD Bypass.

Good write-up though

Re: Double Din Bezel by Double D Mods

Bezel looks great! Had to post something because Double D mods is only about 15 minutes from where I live right now. Dennis did a double din bezel for a friend's 4th gen Camaro as a test for his generation and it turned out great also. Some of the stuff is a little pricey but you get what you pay for and he does quality work. If you've ever tried to do any mods like this you know it takes forever and it never looks as good.
Dennis is very particular and does great work!
He even stopped to one of my car shows in Platteville and the corvette from his business car looks even better in person!

$45 to mod this bezel I think is a very fair price. Did he do any Camaro bezels yet?

Punisher,

I know you didn't use the brackets, but where did you buy them from?

Is your radio just sitting in there with no screws?

Also, is anything lost from trimming inside the pod? Like, did you lose AC or something?

salfirebird92 - Negative. The stereo litterally just fit in there alone. I had to reach behind the pod and move everything around to make it fit right. It fits like a glove, its not going anywhere.

wgripp - Brackets came with it but I think I used them in the developement of my Terminator mini-gun for Halloween

No screws, but it's in there like lego blocks stick to each other. It doesn't move or shift. Putting a GPS or Sat radio unit in there will be a challage.

No, didn't lose AC or heat but you need to be crafty with the lines. Its a easy mod, you won't enounter too many problems you can't solve by thinking them through.

This thread reminds me that I sent in my bezel for modifications for my new Pioneer AVH-P8400BH 7" monitor head unit. I got it done a few months ago and haven't even mocked it up yet. I'll do that next week when I get back to town.

Yeah Dude, I know the deal. I got wrapped up in a vintage Harley project. Just about done with it. I need to find one more straight taillight for the bird before I smoke them.

Re: Double Din Bezel by Double D Mods

I know this thread is a year old now but I have been wanting to put a double din in my '89 Z28 but Double D Mods isn't showing the love for 3rdgen Camaros. The Firebird options are 'a plenty' with multiple bezels and multiple stereo/kit packages, but the Camaro is just a piece of plastic.

I emailed Dennis and asked if he could put up some packages for the 3rdgen Camaros. If he does I will purchase and show pics as I haven't really seen any good pics of an older Camaro with a double din unit.

Termn8r - Dennis is a great dude and Camaros are more popular. Hit him up and get some followers and he'll hook you guys up. I kinda led the charge on the Firebird ones. He was happy to make them for us.

Dennis shot me an email and said to just call and he will work with anyone on their Camaro's. He also said we could send in our old bezel and he would work on it just as he did the firebirds.

His phone # is on the website for anyone else interested!

I will be calling him tomorrow!

Is the cost of the Camaro ones still $99?
I talked to him about a year ago, and he said he was going to try and improve the process for the Camaro. Which I was hoping would lower the cost some.

Has anyone bought a Camaro one yet? I would like to see pics.

They do have an option for $65 to send them yours, or a spare stock one, & they will mod it. Either way, they are hand made to order. They don't have a machine to just crank out thousands of them a day to send to other vendors.

i think the problem is that the camaro opening is already too wide and has to be built up.

Re: Double Din Bezel by Double D Mods

did the parking brake bypass.

looks like i'm using the same headunit punisher is... Pioneer AVH-P3400 BH.

But, now my power antenna won't come up!

I connected the blue/white wire on the headunit harness to the solid blue (antenna power) wire on the adapting harness.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Re: Double Din Bezel by Double D Mods

how the heck do you remove the radio pod?

I removed the 5 bolts you mentioned, plus another 2 on the inside. it still won't come out. I'm trying to remove a 10mm bolt off the "floor" of the radio pod area. I've loosed that bolt all I can, but it wont come off the threaded studd its screwed on to.

Cleaned it really good inside and out.

What is hitting bottom is this "plastic nub" that sticks out in the middle of the 2 heater vents (see photo). Another easy fix.

Once radio pod is removed:

*IF YOU LIKE - you can trim the carpet down a bit and make more room for stereo add ons.

1. Removed the long piece of plastic with the 2 vents on the left and right side (Remove 2 long and 2 short bolts) from the radio pod (See photo).

2. The 2 heater ducts are stapled on (remove 4 staples with needle nose pliers). Easy (see photo)

3. Then with a pocket knife cut the 2 ducts free of the plastic hump. The plastic is so thin it just went right trough it with one hand. If I folded it on the seam few times the ducts would have come off that way too, that is how thin the plastic was.

4. Reinstall both ducts (2 long and 2 shorts bolts) into radio pod.

5. Reinstall Radio pod into car but don't install the Climate control bolts YET because you have to kinda wiggle the stereo in under it after you plug the stereo in. Also make sure the heat ducts line up.

7. Once the stereo is under the climate controls, bolt climate controls in (3 bolts).

8. Stick on faceplate.

I didn't wire it yet but here are pictures of it installed. Really looks awesome.

Wiring now.

Sorry to dig up this old thread but how is the unit secured to the pod?

P.s you can just ground the handbrake wire to view dvd s with the handbrake off...

I had custom brackets made to secure the unit to the pod. Got raped at a cost of $100. Punisher does not have his unit secured, it's just (tightly) floating in there.

On newer headunits, you have to use a relay to bypass the parking brake wire. I picked up one of the ultra-small ones on ebay for $10 or $15.

Re: Double Din Bezel by Double D Mods

I ordered this for my 89 Iroc about a month ago. I haven't gotten it yet but it does say it takes 6 weeks. When I get it I will post pictures. I know some people think its crazy to pay $100 for this, but it is only $65 if you send in your old one and to be honest my old one was cracked, to get a new one anyway was $50 give or take, so it was way worth it to me.

If you can find one cheaper or built better let us know. All us "third gengens" would be interested. You do know how supply and demand works, right. They are the only game in town'

I got mine a few days ago, but I'm waiting on my installer to finish installing the Dynamat so I can get everything back together. I will post pictures when it's back together. They took an extra week and a half to get mine delivered, but it was right around Labor day when they finished it.
