Thumbs Up for Pro-Built Automatics

I am totally satisfied with the entire experience. Dana toook the time to go over my wants, needs, and desires in a transmisssion. We spent about an hour on the phone going over everything. His customer service is top notch!!

If any of you are in the market for a new trans, I encourage you to give him a call. Why buy an "off the shelf" trans, when you can get one custom built.

Additionally, I picked up a Vigilante Converter from him.

The trans was securely fastened to a pallet and arrived undamaged, via air freight, to my door here in Hawaii.

After nearly two months (Aug-Sep) of shopping around locally (what is disappointment that was), through Summit, Jegs, and calling Art Carr, Hughes Performance, and TCI, I decided in early Oct to go with Pro-Built......and I am happy with my decision.

I will follow up once its in the car.

My rear main is leaking, so I figured I may as well re-build my trans while it is out (89,000 miles). After calling 4 shops out here (Honolulu, Hawaii), I was quoted any where from $1200-1500.00 to re-build my 700R back to stock specs. Thats with me dropping the trans and bringing it to them.

I emailed Dana in August and he suggested I give him a call, which I finally did in early October.....and he remembered our emails.

I purchased the Street/Strip 700R-4. The shift points are raised to 5200 rpms and I can hold 1-3 to any RPM. It has all the internals that he lists on his site. He says it will shift firm in normal driving, and the shifts will get firmer (sp) as I give it the gas.

It did not ship with the tailshaft, but he did send me the seal kit so that I can re-use my own. He will also need to know what type of sender you have for the speedo. Electric or mechanical/electric.

I also bought a Vigilante which was built to stall at 2600.

Here is the breakdown of the cost:

Street/Strip 700R-4: $1495.00 + $245.45 Air Freight
Vigilante Conveter: $719.00 + $71.00 UPS 2nd Day Air
The shipping is alot, which is one reason why an REALLY looking forward to moving back to the mainland next March.

I went with Dana's suggestions for just about everything. We kept the stall speed on the conservative side since I am running a blower, with stock internals.

Hope this helped you out. I have read alot of your posts here an you have helped me out quite a bit. Fot that I say "THANKS".

Happy Holidays,

Jeff Foster

Damn these thirdgens arent cheap, thats approximately $2350 for a trans upgrade! I hope it lasts a long time for you. I'll probally do the same with mine as soon as my power numbers rise above the stock trans capabilities! Have fun with your new trans!

that sounds about right for all the parts and necessary pieces. mine is very similar, i'm running a 2800 stall though. the vigilante is nice because you can turn it in down the road for a change if needed. hope it works out well for you.

Hey Kandied-

Did you notice a big change in your cars driving manner after the converter swap?

What should I expect.

Thanks for the help.

yes but i can't testify because i changed so many things at once...

the stall is the most noticeable as you have to learn how to use it. it's not too bad but it almost feels slower at first.

Goddammit!

With all the problems I have been having with my custom built race shifter, requiring a rebuilt after a year, I realize it would have been much esier and MUCH cheaper to go with ProBuilt. I'll see if he can build me something for my next project.

87 GTA,

Dana's shop is in Calimesa, Ca. He also has a website:

www.pro-built.net

I found out about him in the "Transmission and Drivetrain" forum. He has quite a few positive reviews and came highly recommended. I am impressed with the tech assistance he provides to the board member's.

Bandit5- Hope you get all the bugs out of your car. Whatcha runnin??

Kandied- Thanks for the feedback. What did you mean when you said "learn how to use it"?

Now I am kicking around doing the install myself or taking it to a shop to have the work done. The only thing that is holding me back is this special tool I was told I need to install the rear main seal correctly. I am gonna post in the General Engine forum to see if I get some feedback.

Thanks all.

Jeff

it takes some getting used to...nothing that isn't cured after a couple miles of driving. much like how you need to learn to launch with a car after you get some more power you'll need to learn how to throttle it properly. it's just different, you'll see.
