TPI Performance Transmissions - AVOID!!!!

From personal experience, this business does NOT build their transmissions the way they claim or with the quality of parts they claim. I bought an "extra heavy duty" 700R4 from these folks to put in an 86 Suburban half ton 4x4 with a 454HO Holley-fuel-injected engine. The transmission failed in less than 16K miles.

I have a friend with 25 yrs transmission experience who just opened it up and we coudn't believe our eyes. A friend of mine set up a web page to illustrate it all. Basically for $1800 I bought a stock 700R4 with a shift kit, 10 vane pump, alto clutches, and a Corvette servo. Almost all clutches were burned up, gears chipped, poor quality split-type seals, and on and on.

There wasn't even a heavy duty intermediate sprag or sun shell. I am lucky it hadn't grenaded according to my friend.

It had to be basically rebuilt with "REAL" heavy duty parts. Like, aftermarket heavy duty sun shell, 4L60E intermediate sprag, ZPAK 3-4 clutches, kevlar wide band, and the parts cost was around $350 (labor was extra). These were all superior parts to those removed. It is a shame that big companies like TPI take advantage of us who cannot build our own transmissions.

TPI told us they could fix it for $1600. No thanks. Check out the web page to see for yourself TPI's "heavy duty parts" and quality work:

The friend is actually a friend of the guy that now owns that truck (I sold it a few weeks ago). Had to "finance" the 383 SuperRam I put into my 91 Formula.

If I ever do another 700R4, I probably will use that guy (or a Raptor)
