I'm very likely to do exactly that, Henry. Just thinking out loud.

If the Hi-beam H1 Hella housings used HIDs with lower power-use would I continue to have the problem?

And do the E-code Hellas do have a pretty sharp cut-off but not sharp enough? Guess I should look more at the pattern they throw.

Not quite sure about the last option though.

You shouldn't use HID in lamp housings designed for halogens; this will just cause a lot of angry people and possibly a ticket or two. HID bulbs should be used in a proper projector housing in order to stay within DOT regs. High beams are one thing since you won't be using them for regular on road driving [i.e. since you turn them off when someone is in front of you and you'd turn them off when a vehicle is passing in the opposite direction]. Using HIDs in a halogen designed lamp housing [designated by usually having a "H" marking at the top of the glass] will cause heavy glare, halos, and artifacting; this causes other people on the road to have issues with their night vision.

Projector lamps have a horizontal cut off

Where as halogens typically have more of a spot light patterned beam.
Well I now have a proper HID projector setup with the solenoid to switch between high and low beams. I was just trying to find a cheap way to have nicer lighting but HIDs in the halogen housing proved to be far too useless, much worse than stock. So I rebuilt the eBay housings to hold a projector from TRS and it's by far one of my favorite things on my car now.

I have the Hella Housings with HIDs for a few years now. I have never been harassed by the cops, not have I pissed off any oncoming drivers. It's all about proper aiming.
